BALTIMORE, MD- The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team came away with a convincing conference victory over Washington College Thursday night in Goldfarb Gym. The Blue Jays used a very efficient first quarter offensively along with lockdown defense throughout the entire game to get an early lead that they would not squander the entire game, finishing with a 59-44 victory.
Â
JHU played one of their best quarters offensively this season in the opening quarter against the Shorewomen. The Blue Jays went 8-for-13 from the floor, good for 61.5%, which is the highest the Blue Jays have shot from the field in a single quarter this season. Washington College had their best quarter in terms of field goal% in the first quarter as well, but it only amounted to 10 points as they went 5-for-16 (31%).
Greta Miller scored on a fast break layup in the opening seconds of the game and the Blue Jays did not trail once from that point on. Hopkins stormed out to a 21-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Â
Coming into the game, Washington College led the conference in point per game (63.4) but were unable to live up to that standard against a feisty Blue Jays defense. JHU held the Shorewomen to just 26% from the field and 11% from three-point range.
Â
In the third quarter,
Joy Sanders knocked down a three pointer from the top of the arc with the shot-clock winding down to cut the deficit down to three at that point. That would be the last point Washington College would get until there was 1:37 left in the quarter when
Andrea Prestianne made two free throws. Hopkins finished the third outscoring the Shorewomen 16-6, including a 12-0 run at one point, with three pointers knocked down by
Natalie Mann and
Sophie deBettencourt. The Blue Jays held down the fort in the 4
th quarter to coast to a 59-44 victory moving them to 4-3 on the season and 2-1 in Centennial play.
Â
On a night where she was celebrated for reaching 1,000 points in her collegiate career,
Olivia Parisi dropped the most points she has had in a Hopkins jersey with 20 off the bench to lead the Blue Jays. Parisi also came away with her first double-double for the Jays, leading the team with 10 rebounds.
Michaela O'Neil was behind her with 15 points and four rebounds and
Macie Feldman also pitched in six points and five rebounds. Hopkins finished with 27 points off the bench to help solidify the win.
Â
Washington College was lead in scoring by Joy Sanders who had 17, followed by Prestianne who had 12. No other Shorewomen reached double figures and they fell to 4-3 (2-2) on the season.
Â
The Blue Jays play their last game, before they break for finals and winter break, Saturday Dec. 3 when they take on Bryn Mawr on the road (1 pm).
