The Short Story:Â The 24
th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team outscored host Penn, 5-2, in the second half to defeat the 19
th-ranked Quakers, 10-8, Saturday afternoon.
Â
How it Happened
• Penn jumped out to a three-goal lead in the first seven minutes of the game with three different Quakers getting on the board early. Junior
Madison McPherson got the Blue Jays on the board with 3:29 to play in the first when she dodged the middle of the fan and scored on a lefty shot on the run. Just 80 seconds later, freshman
Charlotte Smith buried a free position shot to pull Hopkins within one.
• Keely Block pushed Penn's lead back to two at the 1:44-mark as she dodged from behind the cage and scored from in close. Fifth-year senior
Shelby Harrison responded with a free-position goal as the clock ticked under one minute and the Quakers led 4-3 after one.
• The Blue Jays wasted little time in drawing level just 1:31 into the second quarter. With time winding down on the possession clock, sophomore
Abbey Hurlbrink weaved thru the defense and beat Krissy Kowalski to the lower left corner. Penn retook the lead midway through the quarter when Niki Miles found Lexi Edmonds on the back-door for the one-timer.
• Harrison answered when she blew home a hard shot from 10 yards out to tie the game at five with 5:51 to go in the quarter. Kaitlyn Cumiskey had the final say of the half however, scoring on the run to the far post to stake Penn to a 6-5 lead with 2:47 on the clock.
• Hopkins struck quickly early in the third quarter, scoring twice in just nine seconds to grab its first lead of the game. After a Quaker turnover in transition, senior
Georgia Esmond found Smith open to her right and she beat Kelly Van Hoesen to tie the game. The Blue Jays were awarded the draw after a Quaker foul and just nine seconds after Smith tied the game, Harrison gave Hopkins the lead with her third of the game. JHU looked to take that 7-6 lead into the fourth, but an Edmonds goal with just three seconds on the clock tied the game.
• The Blue Jays erupted for three goals in a span of just two and a half minutes to push out to a 10-7 lead. After an
Annika Meyer takeaway, McPherson found Esmond deep in the Quaker zone. Esmond drew a double team and scored over the top to put JHU on top. Just 60 seconds later, she took a pass from Smith on the doorstep, hitched a couple of times and then slipped a shot over Van Hoesen's shoulder. Sophomore
Jordan Carr then beat Van Hoesen and the possession clock with a bouncer from in-tight to put the Jays up three.
• Block ended the run for the Quakers when she dodged from behind the cage and scored on a shovel shot with 9:22 to play. As it turned out, that would be the last goal of the game as both defenses clamped down.
