McRae Shines On Mound - Blue Jays Shut Down NC Wesleyan 7-1

• Score: #4 Johns Hopkins-7, #19 NC Wesleyan-1
• Records: JHU (2-1) • NCW (5-4)
• Pitching Decision: W: McRae (1-0) • L: Tubb (0-2)
• The Short Story: Jack McRae was outstanding on the mound and freshman Shawn Steuerer continued to thrive at the plate, leading JHU to a 7-1 victory over NC Wesleyan to close out the Baltimore Invitational and earn Bob Babb his 1,200th career win.

How it Happened
• The Battling Bandits struck first, getting back-to-back doubles to lead off the contest. Davie Morgan roped one down the left field line to start the game and came around to score on an RBI double from Drifton Padgett. McRae struck out two of the next three to settle things down.

• After Matthew Chang lined out to open the game, AJ King singled to center for the Blue Jays first hit. Tripp Myers drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Freshman Shawn Steuerer homered for the second consecutive day to give the Jays a 3-1 lead. Steuerer fell behind 0-2 before battling back to 3-2 and driving the payoff pitch over the right-field wall.

• Both pitchers got into a rhythm, throwing up four straight innings of no runs. The Jays finally added another in the bottom of the sixth. Steuerer led off the inning with a double to left center. Tubb retired the next two batters, but NC Wesleyan shortstop Tyson Bass couldn't handle the grounder from Jack Pausic, putting runners on first and third. Pinch-hitting for Sam Browning, Jack Walters fought one off the hands into right field for an RBI single.

• The Jays tacked on another in the seventh to make it 5-1. Alex Crosby retired Jimmy Stevens to start the inning, but issued walks to King and Myers. Wesleyan brought Clayton Gilmore into the contest with Gilmore getting Steuerer to line out. However, deFaria ripped a two-out single into center, bringing home King and giving the Jays some more insurance.

• Hopkins put it out of reach in the bottom of the eighth, pushing two more runs across the board. Pausic was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Jake Siani sac bunted him over to second. Eli Fahnestock came on to pinch run for Pausic. James Ingram was retired, but Stevens looped a two-out single into center, bringing home Fahnestock and advancing to second on the throw. King ripped another single into left, scoring Stevens, but King was thrown out on the bases to end the inning.
