Savedoff Shuts Down Lions In First Career Start - Blue Jays Win 8-2

• Score: #5 Johns Hopkins-8, Penn State Harrisburg-2
• Records: JHU (3-1) • PSUH (2-3)
• Pitching Decision: W: Savedoff (1-0) • L: Eden (0-1)
• The Short Story: Matt Savedoff threw 7.0 innings, striking out four and allowing just one run in his first collegiate start to lead Hopkins to an 8-2 victory over Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday afternoon.

How it Happened
• Hopkins got on the board in the bottom of the second inning after the first nine batters of the contest were retired. Freshman Shawn Steuerer led off the inning with a free pass. With one out, Sam Browning hit a ball back up the middle, off the leg of Harrisburg starter Danny Eden, to put runners on first and second with one out. Eden hurled a wild pitch, putting both runners into scoring position for Hopkins. Dylan Whitney grounded out to second, bringing home Steuerer for a 1-0 Hopkins lead.

• The Lions answered back in the top of the third, getting a leadoff walk from Kevin Lehner. Lehner swiped second and advanced to third on a groundout from Josh Lantz. The Jays brought the infield up, but Drew Sassaman laced a single past a diving Jack Pausic to tie the game at 1-1 with an RBI single. It would prove to be the only run Savedoff allowed.

• Hopkins started a stretch of run-scoring innings, retaking the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Browning picked up his second hit of the day, a one-out single through the hole into left. Whitney singled, moving Browning to second. James Ingram dropped down a sacrifice bunt, putting two in scoring position for Hopkins. Tripp Myers drew a walk to load the bases before Eden hit Jimmy Stevens with a pitch to give Hopkins a 2-1 lead.

• JHU added another in the fifth after a Savedoff 1-2-3 inning with a pair of K's. With Riley Blatt in to pitch for PSUH, Steuerer drew a one-out walk. After a fly-out, Browning walked to put two on with two away. Whitney singled up the middle, driving in his second run of the day to give Hopkins a 3-1 lead.

• The Blue Jays scored in their third of four straight innings, once again tacking on a single run to make it 4-1. With Tyler Stabley on the mound for the Lions, Stevens hit a titanic blast to left-center, pushing JHU ahead by three runs.

• After three straight one-run innings, the Jays finally busted the game open in the seventh. Tom Westers allowed back-to-back doubles with Steuerer scoring his third run of the day on a Pausic RBI double. Browning drew another walk, reaching base in his fourth straight plate appearance. Westers induced a double play ball to leave Pausic on third with two outs. Dallas Gilbert came into the game, walking Ingram. Myers crushed a home run to right-center, putting three more runs on the board to make it an 8-1 game.

 • The Lions threatened in the ninth, scoring a run off a Chase Smith RBI single. Jack Tarantino entered the game with the bags full and nobody out and proceeded to strike out three straight hitters to retire the Lions and give the Jays the win.

 Inside the Box Score
