The Short Story: Johns Hopkins pushed four runs across the board in the first inning, but the Huskies chipped away, tying the game in the ninth and winning it in extra innings.Â
How it Happened
• Hopkins got the bats going early, but also got some help from the Husky defense in putting up a four-run bottom of the first inning. After junior right-hander
Kieren Collins set down USM 1-2-3, Jimmy Stevens got the ball rolling with a base hit through the left side. Stevens moved up on a passed ball, moving over to third on an error by Husky second baseman Jonathan Wil.
Tripp Myers then singled, bringing home the first run of the contest. Two batters later,
Jared deFaria singled to left center, bringing home
AJ King to make it 2-0.
Sam Browning ripped a double, scoring Myers and pushing deFaria up to third.
Jack Pausic hit a slow chopper to short, the shortstop Janek Luksza threw to first, but Arlo Pike couldn't hold on. deFaria scored on the play to give Hopkins a 4-0 lead.Â
Â
• Southern Maine got one back in the second against Collins. Wil hit a one-out single through the left side. After Collins struck out Luksza, Zach Mooers hit one into center, putting two on with two away. Jason Komula found the hole through the left side and brought home Wil with an RBI single.Â
Â
• Both pitchers settled into a grove, not allowing any more runs until the bottom of the fifth when Hopkins added another. King started the inning off with a leadoff double. The senior captain advanced to third on a Myers flyout to center.
Shawn Steuerer bounced one to short with the infield up. Luksza madde the throw home, but the home plate umpire ruled that King's slide avoided the tag and the Jays lead was 5-1 after the RBI fielder's choice from Steuerer.Â
Â
• The four-run lead was cut in half on two swings as the Huskies got solo home runs in the seventh (Jason Komula) and eighth (Arlo Pike) and Komula added a two-out run-scoring single in the eighth to make it 5-4.
• After Bryce Afthim worked a scoreless bottom of the eighth for the Huskies, Southern Maine got a one-out solo home run from Brogan Searl to tie things up in the top of the ninth. Afthim added another scoreless inning of relief in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extras.
• Southern Maine put two runners in scoring position with nobody out before eventually loading the bases on a strikeout/wild pitch. From there, Jack Lablond and Searl worked bases-loaded walks to walk in the go-ahead and insurance runs. Afthim allowed two singles in the bottom of the 10th, but the Blue Jays left both stranded to end the game.
