The Short Story: The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins baseball team erased a 2-1 deficit with a four-run third-inning outburst to fuel a 6-3 win over 13th-ranked Southern Maine Saturday afternoon at Stromberg Stadium.Â
How it Happened
• After Jason Komula drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the third to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead, the Blue Jays rallied with four runs in the bottom of the inning to grab a 5-2 lead that they would never relinquish.
Â
• An RBI-double from
AJ King plated
James Ingram to tie the game and
Jared deFaria followed shortly after with a two-run double that plated King and Shaw Steuerer, who had followed King's double with a single.Â
Jared deFaria then scampered home on a
Jack Walters single down the right field line for the fourth and final run of the inning. The last three of the four runs in the inning for Johns Hopkins all came with two outs.
• Southern Maine scratched for a run in the top of the fourth as Brogan Searl led off with a single, advanced to second on a Cam Seymour walk and raced home on an Arlo Pike single to right to make it 5-3.
• Hopkins didn't wait long to restore the three-run lead as
Dylan Whitney led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run down the line in left. As it turned out, that would be the final run of the game.
Â
• The Blue Jays went to the bullpen to start the fifth inning and Blue Jay freshman
Reed Bolin was spectacular over the final five innings. The Huskies managed just one base runner over the final five innings against Bolin as only a Cam Seymour double kept Bolin from five consecutive perfect innings. Seymour didn't last long at second as Ingram picked him off with a perfect throw after Seymour had wandered too far from the bag.
Â
Inside the Box Score
• Bolin went 5.0 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out three. With Seymour getting picked off, he faced the minimum of 15 batters in his five innings of work.
• Steuerer and Walters both had multi-hit games for the Blue Jays, who also got the two runs batted in from deFaria.
Â
• The Huskies managed just five hits against Bolin and Blue Jay starter
Jack McRae. The Huskies did manage seven walks off McRae in his four innings of work, but found no success at the plate after Bolin took over.
What It Means
• Johns Hopkins improves to 4-2 on the year with two of the four wins coming against top-20 teams in 13th-ranked Southern Maine and 19th-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan.
• Southern Maine slips to 1-2 on the year. After topping Johns Hopkins 7-5 on Friday, the Huskies suffered a 17-2 loss to defending national champion Salisbury earlier on Saturay at Johns Hopkins.
Â
Up Next
• Johns Hopkins will wrap up its three-game weekend on Sunday when the Blue Jays take on Salisbury at Stromberg Stadium. Please note the start time of Sunday's game was moved to 1 pmÂ
