The Short Story: The Blue Jays scattered nine hits on Sunday afternoon, but couldn't capitalize, falling 3-0 to the eighth-ranked Sea Gulls.
How it Happened
• Salisbury jumped ahead in the top of the first inning. Senior right-hander
Matthew Dillard hit the Gulls lead-off hitter, Kavi Caster with a pitch to open the ballgame. Stephen Rice doubled into the gap in left-center, bringing home Caster. Dillard responded with a strikeout before Rice was gunned down by
AJ King, trying to steal third. The Gulls got another double and another hit-by-pitch, but Dillard induced a fly out with two on and two away to end the inning.
• The Jays tried to get some two out magic going in the bottom half, getting back-to-back singles from
Jared deFaria and
Shawn Steuerer, but Jackson Balzan got
Tripp Myers to fly out to end the inning.
• After two homers vs. Southern Maine yesterday at Babb Field, Caster left the yard for the third time this weekend, driving a pitch to right-center to leadoff the third inning. The Gulls would add another in the inning, getting a bunt single from Rice to start. Rice advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Sky Rahill and then moved up to third on a groundout from Ben Anderson. With two away, Cameron Hyder hit a slow chopper up the first base line. Dillard got there, but was unable to link up with deFaria to retire Hyder who dove headfirst into the base to earn an RBI infield single.
• The Jays next big opportunity came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Steuerer led off the inning with a line drive to center. Myers hit a liner at the shortstop Rice. Rice dropped it initially, but stepped on second to retire the lead runner. Next,
Jack Pausic picked up his second hit of the day, lining one into right to put runners on first and second with one out. After walking
Sam Frank to load the bases, Salisbury went to the bullpen. Brandon Epstein entered to face
Dylan Whitney. Whitney hit it sharply to third base, but Luke Weddell snared it and fired out Myers at home to keep the Jays off the board.
Jack Walters pinch-hit for the Jays, but Epstein got him swinging to suppress the threat.
• Hopkins made another push for runs in the bottom of the seventh, but once again came away empty handed. With Corey Burton in to pitch for Salisbury, Jimmy Stevens doubled down the left field line. King singled to right, putting runners on first and third for Hopkins. The Sea Gulls quickly made a pitching change, bringing Jimmy Adkins in from second to take the mound. Adkins struck deFaria out and then induced a 6U3 double play off the bat of Steuerer, ending the final major threat from JHU.
Inside the Box Score
•
Matt Savedoff continues to be excellent on the mound for Hopkins. The freshman right-hander tossed four scoreless innings in relief of Dillard, allowing just two hits and striking out five. Savedoff has a 1.26 ERA in 14.1 innings of work in 2022.
• Steuerer and Pausic both had three hit days for JHU, combining for six of the team's nine total knocks. Pausic drew a walk in his four plate appearance, making him the onlu Blue Jay who wasn't retired in the game. Steuerer is now hitting a team-best .429 and has four multi-hit games in his young Blue Jay career.
• Rice and Anderson both had multi-hit days for the Gulls. Adkins earned the save with 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four.
