Blue Jays Split a Pair of CC Duals, Fall to Gettysburg, Top McDaniel

Behaeghel's Pin Locks Up Win Over Green Terror

WESTMINSTER, MD – The Johns Hopkins wrestling team closed out the dual meet portion of its 2021-22 schedule on Saturday afternoon as the Blue Jays split a pair of Centennial Conference duals at McDaniel.  The Blue Jays opened with a 27-19 loss to Gettysburg before rebounding for a 27-22 win over the Green Terror.  Johns Hopkins, which expects to have its lineup back at full strength for next week's Centennial Conference Championships, finishes the regular season at 3-9 overall and 1-5 in the Centennial.

Against the Bullets
Gettysburg jumped out to an 18-0 lead after four bouts on the strength of a forfeit, a pin and two wins by decision.  The Blue Jays got on the board at 157 when sophomore Chris Roybal scored an 8-0 major decision of David Brancroft, only to see the Bullets take a major decision of their own at 165.

Johns Hopkins gave itself a chance to pull out the win as senior Joe Paul pinned Efrain DeLeon in 3:42 and Grant Walnoha added 7-0 victory over Blake Silber at 184 to make it 21-13 with two bouts remaining.  Gettysburg's Brendan Loder sealed the win for the Bullets with a 99-second pin at 197 before JHU's Hank Behaeghel pinned Jon Stix at 2:10 of the first period to account for the 27-19 final score

Against the Green Terror
The regular season finale came down to the final bout before the Blue Jays prevailed on the strength of a first-period pin for Beheaghel.  Taking the mat with the Blue Jays down 22-21, Behaeghel needed just 1:55 to end things as he worked Eric Ward, Jr. to his back and locked up the pin to secure the win.

A back-and-forth match saw the lead change hands five times before Behaeghel's heroics.  McDaniel won two of the first three bouts to grab a 10-6 lead with a Brent Lorin first-period pin of Cole Jones providing the Jays with their six early points.

Down by four, the Blue Jays got a Justin Valdoria pin at 149 and a tough 4-3 win for Roybal over Xavier Howard at 157 to go up 15-10, only to have Alex LaVeck score a first-period pin of his own at 165 for McDaniel to give the Terror a 16-15 advantage.

Paul and Walnoha followed with wins by decision to give the Blue Jays a 21-16 lead, but McDaniel's Jaedyn Harris needed less than two minutes to earn a pin at 197 to make it 22-21.  The one-point lead for McDaniel didn't make it through the first period of the final bout at 285 as Beheaghel's pin locked up the win for Johns Hopkins.

Notes of Interest
Pau improved his record to 30-7 on the year.  He becomes just the fourth wrestler in school history to post two 30-win seasons (Paul Bewak, Ricky Cavallo, Dominick Reyes).  Behaeghel's two pins today give him 19 in his career, while Lorin's pin against McDaniel was his 15th. Behaeghel now has a team-leading eight pins on the year.
