th-ranked Navy scored with 3:30 remaining in the first overtime to defeat the 16
th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team, 13-12, Thursday afternoon.
Â
How it Happened
• Hopkins jumped out to a four-goal lead with goals from four different scorers in the game's opening six minutes. Freshman
Charlotte Smith gave the Jays the early lead, scoring on a left-handed shot in traffic just 81 seconds in.
Madison McPherson then scored the first of her two free position goals, followed by strikes from
Maeve Barker and
Georgie Gorelick to stake JHU to the early four-goal lead.
• Charlotte Ryan got the Mids on the board at the 8:33-mark, followed by a Gil Eby unassisted tally to pull the home team within two. McPherson answered with another free position goal to push the lead back to three with 1:13 to go in the first. Eby wasted little time getting one back for Navy, winning the draw and scoring just nine seconds later. Smith had the final say of the quarter, converting a free position shot with just 30 seconds to go to put Hopkins up 6-3.
• Back-to-back goals by Reagan Roelofs and Lindsay Beardmore just two minutes apart cut Hopkins lead to one. Graduate student
Shelby Harrison and senior
Georgia Esmond scored in a span of just 68 seconds and just like that the Blue Jays led 8-5. The Mids came right back with goals from Kasey Dietzel and Leelee Denton to once again make it a one-goal game.
• Senior
Claire Mills answered with the first of her three straight goals, bookended around a Denton goal, and Hopkins led 11-8 with 1:51 to go in the third. A Dietzel tally just 33 seconds later sparked a four-goal run that spanned more than eight and a half minutes and saw Navy take a 12-11 lead. After back-to-back Roelofs' goals, Denton capped the run at the 7:43-mark to give the Mids their first lead. The Blue Jays battled back and got the equalizer on a Barker free position goal with 1:02 left. Navy won the draw to open overtime and possessed the ball for nearly two and a half minutes before Beardmore drew a free position shot with just one tick showing on the possession clock. Beardmore fired a shot as the horn sounded to set off the Navy celebration.
