Navy Rallies Past Johns Hopkins, 11-10

Midshipmen Score Three of Last Four Goals to Top Blue Jays

BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting Navy got a pair of goals from Max Hewitt in a 49-second span late in the fourth quarter and the Midshipmen held Johns Hopkins scoreless for the final six minutes of the game to pick up an 11-10 come-from-behind win at Homewood Field Friday night.  The win is Navy's second straight and the Mids improve to 5-3 on the year, while Johns Hopkins slips to 4-4.

In a back-and forth game that saw six ties, it was a 6-3 Navy spurt to end the game that proved to be the difference.  The Blue Jays had grabbed their third two-goal lead of the game at 7-5 with back-to-back-goals in a 44-second span late in the third quarter.  From there, the Midshipmen would score six of the final nine to grab the victory.

Patrick Skalniak drew the Mids even at 7-7 by the end of the third period as he scored off an assist from Hewitt with 4:24 left in the third and then tied things up with three seconds left in the period.

Navy then grabbed its first lead since early in the first quarter when Skalniak found Jon Jarosz all alone on the crease and Jarosz beat Blue Jay goalie Josh Kirson to give the Midshipmen an 8-7 lead less than two minutes into the fourth quarter.

The Blue Jays responded quickly as Johnathan Peshko zipped a cross-crease pass to Joey Epstein, who scored into an open net 59 seconds after the Jarosz goal and Garrett Degnon blew home his fourth of the game two minutes later off an assist from Epstein to give the Blue Jays a 9-8 lead.

Hewitt and Epstein then traded goals in a span of just 39 seconds midway through the quarter to set the stage for Hewitt's late-game heroics.  Hewitt dodged from the top and got to the goal before slipping one past Kirson with 4:47 on the clock.  Just 49 seconds later, he rifled home a shot from the wing off a feed from Dane Swanson to put Navy up 11-10.

The Midshipmen got a save from goalie Pat Ryan on an Epstein offering with the Blue Jays a man up with just over a 90 seconds to play and successfully cleared, only to have the Blue Jays force a turnover to give themselves a chance.  A Degnon shot zipped wide with eight seconds remaining and the Blue Jays weren't able to get a shot off after a restart from behind as Navy held on for the win.

The Blue Jays led 3-1 early and 5-3 at the half only to see Navy prevent those two-goal leads from ever getting to three.  The only three-goal run of the game was Navy's and that came after the Blue Jays grabbed the 7-5 lead in the third quarter.  From there, the Midshipmen went on the 6-3 game-ending run that sealed the win.
