The Short Story:Â The 20
th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-0 lead less than seven minutes into Wednesday afternoon's game against Georgetown and led by as many as 10 in what became a 16-10 victory over the Hoyas.
Â
How it Happened
• The Blue Jays used an unassisted strike from
Maeve Barker just 26 seconds into the game to ignite the game-opening five-goal run that gave them a lead they would never relinquish.
• After Barker's goal, the Blue Jays got a pair of goals from
Madison McPherson and one goal each from
Abbey Hurlbrink and
Georgia Esmond to build the five-goal lead. One of McPherson's goals and the Hurlbrink tally were on free position shots, but the other three goals were all on dodges as the Blue Jays won their one-on-one matchups early.
• The Hoyas briefly grabbed the momentum as Tatum Geist and Jordyn Sabourin scored unassisted goals of their own just 70 seconds apart to make it 5-2 with more than five minutes remaining in the first quarter, but a
Shelby Harrison free position goal with 87 seconds left in the period was followed by a
Claire Mills strike 11 seconds later to give JHU a 7-2 lead at the end of one.
• The 7-2 lead ballooned to 11-3 at the half as the Blue Jays outscored the Hoyas 4-1 in the second quarter. McPherson matched her first-quarter effort with two more goals, while Mills and
Alayna Costa opened and closed the quarter, respectively. The Hoyas managed just an Ali Diamond goal midway through the period as
Kathleen Garvey made three second-quarter saves in goal for the Blue Jays.
• Mills picked up where she left off as she opened the third quarter with her third of the game – and the second assisted by Esmond – and freshman
Charlotte Smith made it a 10-goal game when she scored off a rebound 22 seconds later.
• The Hoyas made their final push in a five-minute span that bridged the third and fourth quarters as they put together a four-goal run that trimmed the 13-3 deficit to 13-7. Kylie Hazen scored the first two goals in that spree and Diamond capped it with 12:58 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Harrison and Mills answered with their second and fourth goals, respectively, to push the lead out to 15-7 before the Hoyas scored three of the final four goals of the game to account for the 16-10 final score.
Â
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 14-12 all-time against the Hoyas. The Blue Jays have now won three straight and eight of the last 11 in the series.
• Each of the last four games in the series had been decided by just one goal.
• The six-goal margin of victory is the largest for Johns Hopkins against Georgetown since 2016 (10-4) and the 16 goals are tied for the most by the Blue Jays in series history (2012).
Â
Inside the Box Score
• In their first three games, the Blue Jays had scored on 14-of-52 (.269) first-half shots. Today, they scored on 11-of-15 (.733).
• McPherson and Mills combined for eight goals on nine shots as each posted a career-high four goals in the victory.
• Eight different players scored goals for the Blue Jays and seven players had two or more points.
• Both of Harrison's goals came on free position shots. She now has 31 free position goals in her career and is just the fifth player in school history with 30 or more.
• Diamond (3g), Hazen (2g, 1a) and Annabelle Albert (2g) led the way for the Hoyas, who held advantages in shots (28-24) and draw controls (18-12), but couldn't overcome Hopkins' precise shooting in the game (16-of-24/.667).
