Â
How it Happened
•
Georgia Esmond gave the Blue Jays an early one-goal lead as they capitalized off an early Retrievers' turnover. UMBC answered at the 10:58-mark with a hard shot from Dymin Gerow that tied the game. Hopkins answered with goals from
Madison McPherson,
Georgie Gorelick and Esmond to push out to a 4-1 lead with 1:09 to go in the first. Kolby Weedon ended the Hopkins' run when she scored from a tough angle to make it a 4-2 game after one.
•Â
Jeanne Kachris opened the second-quarter scoring when she picked off a UMBC pass and went coast-to-coast before scoring her first career goal on a bouncer. Megan Halczuk answered with a back-hand shot in traffic and it was 5-3 Hopkins with 7:40 to play in the half.
•
Shelby Harrison then cashed in on a free position shot to spark a seven-goal Blue Jay run. Five different players scored during the run, which spanned nearly 15 minutes, and saw JHU take a 12-3 lead with 7:01 left in the third. McPherson and
Maeve Barker combined for the final four goals of the run.
• Gerow ended the run with her of second of the afternoon at 5:13. Less than a minute later,
Keegan Barger caused a turnover deep in the Retrievers' end and found Esmond alone on the doorstep for the score. Jenna McDermott answered with a free position goal and it was 13-5 Blue Jays with 3:50 to play in the third. The Blue Jays weren't done yet, as they got goals from
Jordan Carr and Barger in the final 20.6 seconds to take a 15-5 lead into the fourth.
• Ria Lagdameo converted a free position shot for UMBC at the 8:55-mark, but just over two minutes later,
Carly Steinlauf answered with what turned out to be the final goal of the game.
