The Short Story:Â Eighth-ranked Maryland scored the final eight goals of the game in a 17-6 win over host and 20
th-ranked Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon in Big Ten action.
Â
How it Happened
• After a 3-1 spurt pulled the Blue Jays within three with 6:44 to play, Jordyn Lipkin scored on a rebound of a
Kathleen Garvey save to spark that eight-goal Terps' run that put the game away.
• Hopkins struck first when
Madison McPherson blew past her defender in the right alley and stuck one inside the right post just 64 seconds in. Maryland answered with five straight to push out to a 5-1 lead with 19.1 seconds left in the first quarter. But Hopkins wasn't done for the quarter. McPherson won the draw and raced into the offensive zone. She passed to
Georgia Esmond, who then found a cutting
Maeve Barker, who beat Emily Sterling with just 0.6 seconds on the clock.
• Hannah Leubecker opened the second quarter with a free position goal to stake the Terps to a 6-2 lead. The Blue Jays answered just 51 seconds later after some tic-tac-toe passing ended with another Barker goal on the doorstep.
• Two quick goals from Eloise Clevenger and Shaylan Ahearn put Maryland back up 8-3 at the 6:26-mark.
Shelby Harrison cashed in on a free position shot followed by a
Georgie Gorelick goal from the left alley and it was 8-5 at the half.
• Libby May scored from a tough angle off the dodge just 30 seconds into the third. After getting a stop on defense, the Blue Jays capitalized in transition.
Bailey Cheetham carried into the box on the clear and then found
Claire Mills open in the slot for the score. Mills' goal capped that 3-1 run that brought the Blue Jays within three late in the third.
