Virginia's Early Run Powers Cavaliers Past Johns Hopkins

Cavaliers Jump to 4-0 Lead, Never Look Back

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The second-ranked Virginia men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one period, pushed the margin to 10-1 at the half and never looked back as the Cavaliers eased past visiting Johns Hopkins, 19-8, Saturday afternoon at Klockner Stadium.  The win improves Virginia's record to 5-0, while the 14th-ranked Blue Jays slip to 3-3.

Virginia was up just 1-0 as the clock ticked under the six-minute mark of the first quarter, but the Cavaliers struck twice in less than a minute as Xander Dickson and Payton Cormier tallied off assists from Griffin Schutz to ignite a 9-1 run over the final 20:34 of the first half.

Six different players scored during the 9-1 spurt with Dickson, Cormier and Connor Shellenberger each scoring twice.  Six of the nine goals were assisted and the run was broken only by a Jacob Angelus unassisted goal midway through the second quarter for Johns Hopkins.

The Blue Jay offense got going a bit in the third quarter as Jack Keogh opened the second-half scoring and Garrett Degnon scored a pair in the period, but Cormier added four more in the quarter himself and the Cavaliers scored twice in the final eight seconds to carry a 17-4 lead into the fourth quarter.

Johns Hopkins would outscore the Cavaliers 4-2 in the final 15 minutes with Keogh and Connor DeSimone going back-to-back early in the period and Ian Krampf and Jack Hawley adding the first goals of their careers in a two-minute span late in the game to account for the final scoring.
