• The Short Story: Leading by one run in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Blue Jays put up a nine-run inning to post 19 runs, their most in a game since 2019, to defeat Gettysburg on Tuesday evening in Baltimore.
How it Happened
• Gettysburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half, getting some help from the Blue Jays defensive woes. Kyle Miller led off the game with an infield single, moving to third after back-to-back ground outs. Andrew Decker hit a chopper up the middle, but
Jack Walters couldn't make the play, putting the Bullets on the board first. In the second, David Preziuso reached on an error to open the inning. Shane Manieri doubled, putting two runners in scoring position for JR McCloskey who drove in the pair with a two-run single to right, pushing Gettysburg ahead 3-0. After a two-out walk, Tristan Neels hit a ball up the middle.
Dylan Whitney made the play, but couldn't make the short throw to second, allowing another run to score.
• The Bullets needed three pitchers to get through the bottom of the second inning as the Blue Jays took a 5-4 lead in the frame. Starter Nate Masteralexis retired the first batter of the inning before
Jared deFaria got the Jays on the board with his first homer of the season. Whitney drew a walk, Walters was hit by a pitch and
Matthew Cooper walked to load the bases. Brett Leighton entered the game to pitch for Gettysburg, striking out
AJ King for the second out. Leighton lost control from there, hitting
Shawn Steuerer and
Jack Pausic with pitches to make it 4-3.
Tripp Myers gave the Jays the lead with a two-run single to make it a 5-4 game. Leighton hit
Isaiah Winikur, his third hit-by-pitch in the last four batters, and was pulled from the game. Andrew Weinbrum retired deFaria to end the inning.
• After a strong third inning from
Matt Savedoff, the Jays pushed three more runs across the board in the bottom half. Whitney homered to put the Jays on top by two runs with a solo shot to right-center. Walters drew another walk and scored on an RBI triple from Cooper to deep center. Gettysburg made another pitching change and King added an RBI with a sacrifice fly to score Cooper.
• With an 8-4 lead, the Jays allowed one run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to make it an 8-7 game. In the top of the sixth, Decker tripled and Mark Seibert doubled with one-out to cut the deficit to 8-7. Seibert's double ran Savedoff from the game, bringing
Jonah Offman into the contest. Offman walked the first batter he faced before a throwing error from deFaria loaded the bases. Offman got Manieri to hit a slow chopper back to him on the mound, getting the lead runner to keep the lead. Offman got McCloskey looking to end the top of the inning and gave a triumphant roar as he returned to the dugout with the Jays still in possession of the lead.
• An incredibly close game became...welll, not so close... after the bottom half of the inning. The Jays scored nine runs on eight hits to take a double digit lead in the contest.
Isaiah Winikur singled and scored on an RBI double from deFaria to bring a new Gettysburg pitcher in. Tyler Lizell retired Whitney for the first out of the inning, but that was all he could muster. Walters singled up the middle to score deFaria. After another Cooper walk, King doubled, scoring Walters and advancing Cooper to third. Steuerer promptly brought the pair home with a two-run double to right center. That was all for Lizell as the Bullets went back to the 'pen. Pausic drew a free pass before Myers joined the double party, bringing in Steuerer. Winikur roped a double down the left field line, scoring both Pausic and Myers. After deFaria was retired for the second out of the inning, Whitney redeemed his at-bat from earlier in the inning with an RBI single to center. The third Bullet pitcher of the inning retired Walters to end the frame.
• A pair of seventh inning runs made it 17-9 in favor of the Blue Jays who received a two-run homer from
Noah Clement in the bottom of the eighth inning to reach 19 runs for the first time since 2019.
