• Records: JHU (15-12) • GC (14-14)
• Pitching Decision: W: Clementi (2-0) • L – Tarantino (2-2)
• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins defense did it no favors on Friday evening as eight runs wasn't enough in a 14-8 loss to Gettysburg at Kirchhoff Field.
How it Happened
• A six-run first inning got things off to a frenetic start in Gettysburg, PA.
Matthew Cooper led the game off with a walk, scoring on an RBI triple from freshman
Shawn Steuerer. With two outs,
Tripp Myers singled through the right side to score Steuerer and put the Jays up 2-0. Myers stole second, advanced to third on an error and then scored on an RBI single from
Jared deFaria. The three-run lead didn't last very long as the Bullets answered right back with three of their own. The first four Bullet batters all notched hits with an RBI double from Tristan Neels and an RBI single from Andrew Decker made it 3-2 before an out was recorded. With two outs and the bags full, deFaria misplayed a grounder off the bat of Preston Toothman and the game was tied 3-3.
• The scoring did not halt in the second, a four-run inning that saw the Bullets take a 6-4 advantage. In the top half,
Dylan Whitney and
Jack Walters singled, pushing Gettysburg starter Connor Stewart from the game. Cooper brought home Whitney with a sac fly, but that was all the Jays got. In the bottom of the inning, Decker once again struck with an RBI single, tying the game. A pair of errors in the inning by Walters allowed the Bullets to add to the total, getting an RBI from Mark Seibert and a steal of home from Decker.
• Hopkins tied the game in the third inning, starting to turn the tide with a scoreless bottom half from
Jack Tarantino. Myers drew a one-out walk and moved up to third on an
Isaiah Winikur double. deFaria doubled to left center, scoring the pair to make it 6-6 and give him three RBI on the day.
• After a pair of scoreless innings, the wheels fell off the wagon on the defensive side for the Jays, allowing four runs to make it 10-6. After two walks to begin the inning, Tarantino left the game with
Hyunwoo Roh entering. After a fielder's choice and a wild pitch brought in a run, David Preziuso reached on an error by Whitney to put runners on first and third. Roh tried a pickoff to first, but threw it away, allowing a run to score. deFaria fired to second to try and retire Preziuso, but that throw also got away, moving the runner up to third. Seibert followed with an RBI double before an RBI single from Mark Peipher to make it 10-6 in favor of Gettysburg.
• The Jays scored a run in the seventh and eighth innings, but the Bullets answered with two in each to earn a 14-8 win. deFaria drove in another run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, giving him a four RBI game.
