Hopkins Drops Doubleheader At Muhlenberg

GAME ONE
• Score: Johns Hopkins - 4, Muhlenberg - 6
• Records: JHU (18-14, 8-5) • MC (14-18, 3-10)
• Pitching Decision: W: Spano (2-2) • L – Davis (0-1) • Nomura (4)
• The Short Story: Tied at 3-3 after 5.5 innings, the Mules scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-3 lead en route to a game one victory over JHU.

How it Happened
• The Mules put two on the board against Blue Jay starter Jack McRae in the bottom of the first inning. McRae walked the leadoff batter Nick Belli and hit Ryan Gilbert and Jonathan Toth to load the bases. After getting an out, McRae allowed a single up the middle to Trevor Virno, scoring a pair of Mules to take an early 2-0 lead.
• Hopkins grabbed one back in the top of the second inning, trimming the lead in half. Jared deFaria hit a two-out double down the left field line, giving Sam Frank an RBI chance. Frank met the mark, roping a single to left, scoring deFaria.
• Muhlenberg added another run in the bottom of the fifth after McRae had settled in with three scoreless innings in a row. Virno got the best of McRae again, leading off the inning with a double down the line in left. McRae picked up a strikeout before allowing a double to Thomas Rodgers to score Virno and make it a 3-1 game.
• The Blue Jays tied in the top half of the sixth inning at three all. AJ King hit a one-out double to left center. Now with two away, Jack Pausic got a hold of one, sending a two-run shot over the wall in left field to tie the contest.
• The tie game unfortunately didn't hold as the Mules got three against Blue Jay reliever Trevor Davis in the bottom of the sixth. Davis issued a walk to Gilbert to open the inning before hitting Toth with a pitch. Danny Monzo singled to center, scoring Gilbert to make it 4-1. After another hit-by-pitch, Toth came home on a passed ball to make it 5-3. Finally, a ground out from Aidan Legner scored Monzo to make it 6-3.
• deFaria homered to lead off the ninth, cutting the deficit to 6-4, but Will Nomura retired the next three Blue Jays to close it out and earn a three-inning save.

Inside the Box Score
• King & deFaria both had multi-hit days for Johns Hopkins, each going 2-4. King's day raised his season average to .407 with a team-high 13 doubles. deFaria raised his average to .307, hitting his third home run to give him 20 RBI for the season.
• Pausic hit his eighth home run of the season putting him in second on the team this season. His 27 RBI are good for third on the Blue Jays in 2022.
• Dillard completed his second game of the 2022 season, taking the team lead in innings pitched (50.2) and strikeouts (43).

• The Mules jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first four innings of the contest, getting three runs in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth. In the three-run second, Monzo and Virno hit back-to-back singles off of Jack Tarantino to open the frame. Caleb Tereska reached on an error by Shawn Steuerer, loading the bases. After a strikeout, Ryan Friesen hit a sac fly to right, scoring Monzo to make it 1-0. Hebert hit a two-out single up the middle, scoring a pair to make it 3-0.
• An RBI groundout by Virno after a single from Toth and a double from Monzo made it 4-0. The Mules tacked on one more in the fourth to make it 5-0.
• The Jays chipped away in the top of the sixth inning, cutting it to 5-2. James Ingram led off the inning with a bunt single. King drew a walk to put a pair of runners on base. Pausic hit a two-out single to right, scoring Ingram to get the Jays on the board. Tripp Myers singled through the right side to score King and make it a three-run game.
• Hopkins would get just one more baserunner as the Mules added on four runs to make it a 9-2 final.
