The Short Story:Â The Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team used a 6-1 run over the second and third quarters to take control in a 17-14 win over Ohio State on Saturday afternoon in Big Ten action.
Â
How it Happened
• Ohio State jumped out to a 4-0 in the game's opening 11 minutes with goals from four different Buckeyes. Junior
Madison McPherson got Hopkins on the board at the 3:09-mark as she took a pass from fifth-year
Shelby Harrison and scored to the lower left corner.
• McPherson's tally sparked a six-goal Blue Jay run and they grabbed a 6-4 lead with 10:28 to play in the second. Senior
Claire Mills and sophomore
Georgie Gorelick followed with three straight free position goals and it was a 4-4 game at less than three minutes into the second. Gorelick found
Abbey Hurlbrink cutting and she picked the far post on the run to put JHU up 5-4.
Jordan Carr then collected a loose ball and scored on a left-handed shot to the far post.
• Chloe Jordan ended the run and a scoreless drought of 9:32 with a shot off the dodge. Hurlbrink answered with a free position goal and Hopkins led 7-5 at 5:58 in the second. The Buckeyes responded with three goals in less than two minutes to go back up 8-7 with 3:26 to go in the half. Hopkins wasn't done however. A
Jeanne Kachris interception on the defensive end led to a transition goal with Hurlbrink finding Carr open down low for the tying score.
• The third quarter started the same as the second ended. Senior
Annika Meyer intercepted a Buckeye pass at inside the eight-meter and ended with a Gorelick goal in transition just 25 seconds into the half. Nicole Ferrara answered when she spun in the slot and scored to knot the score at nine.
• Hopkins answered with a four-goal run to go up 13-9 after three. Junior
Maeve Barker ignited the run when she scooped up a loose ball and scored from in-tight. Harrison then scored back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart, followed by another Gorelick strike.
• Ohio State opened the fourth with three straight goals to pull within one with 10:29 to play. JHU ended the run when McPherson found Carr on the crease and she scored from the doorstep to make it 14-12. Just 63 seconds later, Harrison cashed in on a free position shot and the lead was three.
• The Buckeyes weren't going away as Ferrara scored a transition goal to make it a 15-13 game with 3:36 to play. Fifty seconds later, the Blue Jays answered with a transition goal of their own, that ended with a Barker hitch-and-score on the crease. Ali Beekhuizen got one back for Ohio State with a free position goal at 2:03 to again cut the lead to two. Gorelick sealed the win when she grabbed a loose ball near the restraining line and raced to the cage for the late score with 17.9 seconds left.
