Cooper's Slam & Savedoff's Pitching Lead JHU to 9-3 Win At Swarthmore

GAME TWO
• Score: Johns Hopkins - 9, Swarthmore - 3
• Records: JHU (12-10) • SWAT (9-14)
• Pitching Decision: W: Savedoff (3-0) • L – Schoessele (2-2)
• The Short Story: Matt Savedoff continued his standout freshman campaign on the mound to earn the win while Matthew Cooper's grand slam in the second inning pushed the Blue Jays to a road victory over Swarthmore on a bleak afternoon in PA.

How it Happened
• Johns Hopkins opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, putting up a five spot on the Garnet. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Jared deFaria started a rally with a two-out double down the left field line. Dylan Whitney singled through the hole on the left side, putting Hopkins up 1-0 with his 12th RBI of the year. Whitney swiped second and the Jays proceeded to load the bases as Jack Walters drew a walk and James Ingram was hit by a pitch. On a 3-2 pitch with the bags full, Matthew Cooper blasted one over the wall in left, emptying the bases with a grand slam to take a 5-0 lead.
• Through four innings, Matt Savedoff had faced the minimum despite allowing a base runner in three of the four. In the first inning, Savedoff allowed a leadoff single before AJ King threw out the would-be base stealer. The second inning ended via double play. After allowing a two-out single in the third, King tossed out another base stealer to keep Savedoff on track as he retired all three batters in the fourth.
• The freshman righty faced his first real threat in the fifth inning. After a one-out single from Matthew Silvestre, Nate Jbara doubled down the left field line to put runners on second and third. Savedoff struck out the next batter before getting a groundout to short to end the threat.
 • Swarthmore broke through in the sixth inning, putting two runs on the board. Max Roffwarg kicked off the inning with a double and Savedoff issued a walk to Kirk Terada-Herzer. After a fielder's choice and a stolen base, Austin Burgess brought two runs home with a double off the wall in left center. Savedoff retired the next two batters to keep the lead at 5-2.
 • The Jays immediately earned those two runs back in the top of the seventh inning. Sam Frank drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. The junior advanced to third on a balk and then scored on an infield chopper by Whitney. Whitney proceeded to steal second, his second swipe of the day, before scoring on an RBI single through the left side off of James Ingram's bat.
 • Not done quite yet, Hopkins added two more in the eighth en route to a 9-3 win. Tripp Myers singled and moved up on a sacrifice attempt. Shawn Steuerer drew a walk and then Frank doubled, scoring Myers and Steuerer with a misplay mixed in on the relay.

Inside the Box Score
• Savedoff remains unbeaten on the mound this season. Now the team's innings leader at 37.1, the freshman has pitched to a 1.93 ERA, appearing in nine contests while making three starts. He has struck out 32 and walked just four thus far.
• Cooper became the third different Blue Jay already this year to hit a grand slam. Cooper is now hitting .327 with five homers, five doubles and 18 RBI while starting 14 games. Steuerer (MIT) and Pausic (Ramapo) are the other Blue Jays with grand slams this season.
• The Jays six stolen bases were a season-high, surpassing five against MIT. Ingram and Whitney swiped two bags each while Frank and Myers each added a steal.
• Hopkins improves to 84-44 all-time vs. Swarthmore in one of the longest series in program history. The teams first met in 1914.

What's Next
• The Jays will host Swarthmore for the return trip on Friday afternoon. First pitch between the Blue Jays and Garnet is set for 330 pm.
