Hopkins Finishes Second in Final Learfield Directors' Cup Standings

JHU Grabs Third Runner-Up Finish

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins University earned its ninth top-10 finish in the Learfield Directors' Cup standings in the last 11 years with a second-place showing in the final 2021-22 standings, which were announced today.  The runner-up finish is the third for Johns Hopkins, which totaled 1,043 points and finished just 37 points behind first-place Tufts, which won its first Directors' Cup with 1,080 points.

Since the Directors' Cup debuted during the 1995-96 school year, Johns Hopkins has 22 top-25 finishes to its credit, including a current streak of 14 straight.  Hopkins has totaled at least 620 points in 12 straight years and 13 of the last 14 with 10 top-10 finishes during that time.  The 1,040 points earned this year are the second-highest total in school history, trailing just the 1,083.75 points in 2018-19.

Tufts grabbed its first-ever title on the strength of a 448-point spring season that boosted the Jumbos' point total for the year to 1,080.  After Johns Hopkins, Middlebury (1,000.5), MIT (936.75) and Washington-St. Louis (922.5) rounded out the top five in the final scoring.

The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.  Through the course of the year, Directors' Cup points are awarded based on a school's finish in up to 18 sports in NCAA Championships.  New in 2017-18 was the stipulation that four of the 18 sports counted for every school must be men's and women's soccer and men's and women's basketball – even if those teams do not score in those sports.

Johns Hopkins scored in the maximum 18 sports and was the only school in the nation to score in the four mandatory counting sports.  Johns Hopkins actually scored points in more than 18 sports, but only the 18 highest-scoring teams were counted in the final Directors' Cup standings.

After strong showings in the fall and winter, the Blue Jay women's outdoor track team led the way in the spring by scoring 82.5 points with a third-place finish at the NCAA Champioinships.  In addition to women's track, Johns Hopkins added 50 points each from men's and women's tennis and 25 from women's lacrosse to account for 207.5 points in the spring.  Previously, Hopkins had accumulated 471 points in the fall and 364.5 points in the winter before the 207.5 spring points locked up the runner-up finish.
