BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's track & field and cross country team placed three student-athletes on the 2021-22 CoSIDA Academic All-America Team it was announced today.
Ella Baran was named to the first team,
Annie Gutierrez was named to the second team and
Alex Ross was named to the third team.
Hopkins' three CoSIDA Academic All-America selections tie the program record. In addition, the Blue Jays' three selections are tied for the most in the nation. JHU has now produced 15 CoSIDA Academic All-America selections, with 11 of those coming in the last 12 years. Baran and Gutierrez become the third and fourth athletes in program history to earn Academic All-America accolades twice.
Baran earns first team honors after picking up second team accolades a year ago. She is just the second athlete in program history to earn first team honors. She graduated last month with a degree in environmental engineering. A seven-time All-American, she won the national championship in the mile at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships. She placed third in the 5,000 at the 2022 outdoor championships and also boasts a pair of runner-up finishes. Baran finished in the top-10 at the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships to help Hopkins win its record-tying seventh national championship.
Baran was named the 2022 USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Indoor Track Runner of the Year and holds the NCAA Indoor record in the mile (4:40.53). She was also named the Centennial Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year in 2021 and is an eight-time conference medalist, including five gold medals. She spent a year as a research assistant with the Bouwer Research Group at Johns Hopkins. Two summers ago, Baran was a materials intern with the Minnesota Department of Transportation. She then worked as a technical sustainability intern with Noblis.
Gutierrez picks up second team honors after being named to the third team a year ago. After earning her bachelor's degree in chemical and biomolecular engineering, she returned to JHU and graduated last month with her master's in engineering management. A four-time All-American, she recently placed third in the heptathlon at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships, shattering the school and conference records in the process. Gutierrez has been named the USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Field Athlete of the Year twice and was named the Centennial Conference Indoor Field Athlete of the Year in 2020.
Gutierrez holds six school records and earned a staggering 24 Centennial Conference medals, including 12 gold medals, in her career. A multi-year captain, she has worked as a North American Power Modeling Analyst for HIS Markit since last summer. She was also a consulting summer analyst for Accenture in 2020 and Accenture Federal Services in 2019.
Ross earns Academic All-America honors for the first time in her career. She is currently pursuing a master's in computer science and is expected to finish in December. She graduated in May 2021 with bachelor's degrees in computer science and applied mathematics & statistics.
Ross was named the 2022 Centennial Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Year after earning gold in the 3,000 and 5,000. She earned four Centennial Conference medals in her career, including three golds. Ross is a five-time NCAA qualifier and a three-time All-American in track. Most recently, she earned All-America honors with a third-place finish in the 10,000 at 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Last fall, she earned All-America honors at the NCAA Cross Country Championships to help the Blue Jays win the national title. Ross was also the runner-up at the 2021 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship and placed fourth at the Centennial Championship.
Ross is working as a software engineering intern at Hyannis Port Research this summer. Last summer, she worked as a cryptanalysis and signals analysis intern. Ross was a teaching assistant for Discrete Mathematics and Introduction to R. She has also worked as a student trainee at Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and was an NSF REU Research Intern.
