Birk's Hat Trick Leads JHU To 5-2 Win over #10 Washington & Lee

BALTIMORE, MD – Graduate student Abby Birk tallied her first career hat trick to lead second-ranked Johns Hopkins to a 5-2 win over 10th-ranked Washington & Lee Thursday in both teams' season-opener at Homewood Field.

Senior Siena Urbanski wasted little time getting the Blue Jays on the board, scoring just 3:34 into the game. She took a long pass from senior Sadie Abboud, dribbled 30 yards and then slotted a shot just inside the left post from the right side of the circle. The Generals answered with 10:06 to play in the second quarter to knot the score at one. From in-tight, Freddie Tobeason slipped a pass through the Blue Jay defense to Betty Boatwright, who deflected it in.

Birk ignited a three-goal Hopkins' spurt in a span of just over four minutes that saw JHU take a 4-1 lead. She got things going with 2:15 to play in the second, dribbling right off a corner insert and firing home a shot to the left post. Just 45 seconds into the third, off another Blue Jay corner, Birk took one touch off an Anna Scott pass and blasted a high shot into the top of the goal. Sixty-five seconds later, the lead was three and Birk had her first career hat trick. Senior Sam Chabot dribbled into the circle from the right side and slotted a pass to Birk, who one-timed a hard shot past Abby Long with 13:10 to go in the third.

Hopkins cashed in another penalty corner 2:16 into the fourth quarter to push its lead to 5-1. Urbanski collected a rebound off a Scott shot and slipped it past the goalie to sophomore Emily Amsden, who tapped it into the open net. Washington & Lee got one back with 8:13 to go in the game to make it a 5-2 game. Tobeason played the ball into the circle from the right side and Peyton Tysinger batted it in at the far post.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 3 with a non-conference contest at eighth-ranked Messiah. The game is slated for a 1:00 pm start at Anderson Field.

Notes: Birk moves into third place in program history with 98 career points. She is also now tied for sixth with 32 career goals. Birk's six points are a career-high while Urbanski matched her career-high with three points
