BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore
Jonathan Cui scored what proved to be the game's only goal in the 76
th minute to lift the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Rowan in both teams' season-opener Thursday afternoon at Homewood Field.
Sophomore
Ian Whamond had the first good look of the game, with a low shot midway through the half, but Tomas Lazicki was able to turn it away. Just a few minutes later, graduate student goalie
Alex Morgret stopped a Chad Yates shot to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Less than seven minutes into the second, a
Tim Treinen header off a corner looked like it was going to put the Blue Jays on top, but Lazicki was able to tip if over the crossbar. Davide Caputo tried to chip one over a charging Morgret in the 58
th minute, but the Blue Jay goalie was able to get a hand on it and knock it away.
Â
Hopkins broke through in the 76
th minute with Cui's goal. Graduate student
Mike Burch played a long ball into the box from the left side. Lazicki came out to play the ball but was unable to control the ball. It rebounded out to Cui, who headed it over Lazicki and into the open net for his first career goal.
Â
The Profs nearly got the equalizer in the 86
th minute with back-to-back shots from Caputo and Mason Martelloni, but both times Morgret was there to make the stop to keep the Blue Jays on top.
Â
Morgret finished with five saves to earn the shutout in his Blue Jay debut. Lazicki made a pair of saves in the loss for the Profs.
Â
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, September 4 with a 1:00 pm non-conference contest at Lycoming.
Â
Notes: Thursday's game was the first meeting between the Blue Jays and the Profs since 2000. Hopkins earns its first win over Rowan since a 2-1 win on October 8, 1998 at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays are now 2-3-0 all-time against the Profs.
