BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's soccer team battled 22
nd-ranked Emory to a scoreless tie Sunday afternoon on a rain-soaked Homewood Field.
Junior
Aidan Dunphy had the first good look of the game in the 17
th minute. He redirected an
Ian Whamond free kick, but Peter Wagner was able to corral the ball to keep the teams even. Midway through the half, senior
Aidan Whamond centered the ball to sophomore
Jonathan Cui, but his shot just missed high.
Axel Whamond nearly put the Blue Jays on top in the 45
th minute with a one-timer in the middle of the box, however it skipped just wide.
Emory's best look came early in the second on an Alejandro Gomez header, but graduate student
Alex Morgret snagged the ball to keep the teams scoreless. Junior
Francis Meyer fired a low hard shot from 20 yards out that just missed wide right in the 60
th minute. Graduate student
Andres Chacon had a great header off an
Ian Whamond corner in the 88
th minute, unfortunately Wagner just got his right hand on it to knock it away.
Hopkins outshot Emory, 10-4, and had an 8-3 advantage in corners. Morgret finished with just the one save to post his fourth clean sheet of the season. Wagner tallied four saves to finish with a shutout as well.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, September 14 as the Blue Jays host the Stevenson Mustangs. The non-conference contest is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
Notes: Today's game was the first-ever meeting between the Blue Jays and the Eagles • Hopkins is unbeaten in its first five games for the second straight year and sixth time since 2010.
