Sullivan Powers Blue Jays Past Randolph-Macon

Sophomore Nets a Pair in Shutout Victory

BALTIMORE, MD – After back-to-back draws against teams currently ranked in the top 10 in the nation, the fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins (3-0-2) women's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals from sophomore Katie Sullivan to fuel a 3-0 victory over previously unbeaten Randolph-Macon (3-1-1) at Homewood Field Wednesday evening.

Sullivan provided all the offense the Blue Jays would need in a 90-second span early in the second half.  After collecting possession along the sideline near midfield, Sullivan took her defender deep into the box before ripping a left-footer from a tough angle just under the crossbar to open the scoring.  Just 86 seconds later, graduate student Kaleigh Gallagher entered the box with pace to the right of the goal and sent a low cross to the near post that Sullivan deflected past Yellow Jacket goalie Abby Cook for her second of the night.
Freshman Maria Romo-Nichols closed out the scoring for the Blue Jays in the 85th minute when she worked her way from the wing towards the middle of the field and ripped one from 25 yards that a diving Cook couldn't save on the near post.

The Blue Jays dominated possession throughout the game and outshot the Yellow Jackets, 34-3.  Cook kept the 'Jackets in the game in the first half as she posted five saves to keep the game scoreless at the break.  The deadlock held until Sullivan netted what proved to be the game-winner just under nine minutes into the second half.

Emma Huntzinger made one save in goal in the first half for the Blue Jays, while Divya Inaganti played the second half and wasn't forced to make a save.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, September 17 when the Blue Jays travel to Bryn Mawr for their Centennial Conference opener (2 pm).

Notes of Interest:  Sullivan has at least one goal in three straight games and four of five on the year; she now leads the team with six goals and one assist for 13 points this season.  This is the third time in Sullivan's career that she has scored a goal in three straight games.  Randolph-Macon entered the game having allowed just one goal in its first four games combined.
