First-Half Surge Powers #4 Hopkins Past Swarthmore, 4-0

Blue Jays Scored Three Goals in Three Minutes to Fuel Victory

SWARTHMORE, PA – The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team took all the drama out of Wednesday night's showdown at Swarthmore as the Blue Jays jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 22 minutes and never looked back in what became a 4-0 victory over the Garnet at Clothier Field.  With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 5-0-2 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Garnet slip to 6-2 and 0-1 in the Centennial.

The Blue Jays needed nearly 19 minutes to open the scoring, then netted two goals in a span of 15 seconds to quickly turn the 0-0 tie into a 2-0 lead.  Working the backdoor off a corner kick from sophomore Katie Sullivan, graduate student Kacie Filian got free from her defender and headed home what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Just 15 seconds later, the Blue Jays struck in transition as graduate student Breukelen Woodard was able to collect a loose ball in the box that Swarthmore goalie Nora Greer couldn't control and she fired into an open net to double the Blue Jay lead.

Rachel Jackson pushed the lead to 3-0 when she chested home a corner from Sullivan three minutes after Woodard's goal and Rebecca Rosen headed home a corner from Lilah Isenberg in the 38th minute to close out the scoring as neither team found the back of the net over the final 52 minutes.

The Blue Jays dominated the stat sheet as they held a 26-2 advantage in shots and took 14 of the 15 corner kicks in the game.  Two Blue Jay goalies – Emma Huntzinger and Divya Inaganti – weren't forced to make a save in posting the shutout, while Greer made eight saves for the Garnet.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, September 24 when the Blue Jays return to Homewood Field and welcome Haverford for another Centennial Conference game (3 pm).

Notes of Interest:  Johns Hopkins has scored 33 goals in seven games; in 2021, the Blue Jays scored 43 goals in 20 games.  The four goals are the most the Blue Jays have scored against Swarthmore since 2010 (W/4-1) and the four-goal margin of victory is JHU's largest in the series since a 6-0 win in 2000.
