BALTIMORE, MD – The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team shutout visiting McDaniel, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays run their unbeaten streak to nine (7-0-2) while the Green Terror suffer just their second loss of the season (6-2-0).
Sophomore
Jonathan Cui nearly put the Blue Jays on the board in the 11
th minute, but his shot from six yards out just went over the crossbar. Hopkins broke through in the 21
st minute off a
Tyler White strike. Sophomore
Diego Elias sent a long over midfield to Cui, who sent a one-touch pass to White inside the box. He took one touch and then buried a shot inside the left post.
In the 52
nd minute, sent a long ball over the Green Terror defense to senior
Axel Whamond, who tried to volley the ball over a charging Austin Heid, but it missed wide left. Six minutes later, sophomore
Ian Whamond had a free kick from 22 yards that seemed destined to dip under the bar and in, but Heid was able to tip it over.
McDaniel's best chance came in the 70
th minute when Noah Rodriguez sent a long ball into the JHU box. Lucas Teshome got a head on it from about eight yards out, but graduate student
Alex Morgret was able to corral it. In the 88
th minute, Heid sent a free kick into the box from about 30 yards out, but graduate student
Tim Treinen cleared the ball out of danger.
Morgret finished with one save while the Blue Jay defense limited the Terror to just three shots, more than 12 below their season average. Heid made four saves in the loss for McDaniel.
