Hopkins Holds Off Dickinson, 3-2, in Centennial Volleyball

Adam Collects 25 Kills for JHU

CARLISLE, PA – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team won its third consecutive match with a 3-2 win at Dickinson Wednesday evening in the Kline Center.  The Blue Jays improve to 6-5 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference, while the Red Devils fall to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial.

After splitting the first two sets, the Blue Jays went up 2-1 with a 25-14 win in the third.  Up 8-4, the Blue Jays used a 7-2 run to grab a 15-6 lead and the Red Devils were never closer than six in the back half of the set.  Freshman Simone Adam (3 kills) and sophomore Roxy Karrer (2) fueled the 7-2 spurt for the Blue Jays.

Dickinson forced the fifth and deciding set by taking set four 25-18.  Up 13-12 through the first 25 points, the Devils took control with a five-point run that turned the one-point lead into a six-point advantage at 18-12.  An Emma Lange kill got the run started for the Devils, who earned points on three Blue Jay attack errors during the spree as well.

The fifth and deciding set saw the Blue Jays sprint out to a 6-2 lead, only to have the Devils reel them in and pull within 11-10 on a Blue Jay ball handling error.  Back-to-back kills from Alice Yu and Lida King for the Blue Jays prompted a Dickinson timeout, but after the teams traded points to make it 14-11, the Blue Jays locked up the win on an Adam kill.

The Red Devils grabbed the first set (25-21) as they took the lead early, gave it up briefly in the middle of the set and used 10-3 run to turn at 12-12 tie into a 22-15 advantage. Lange had a pair of kills during the spree, which was capped by back-to-back Ann Marie Patterson service aces for the Red Devils.  The Blue Jays trimmed the deficit to 22-20 as three Adam kills pulled the Blue Jays to within two, but the Devils closed the set by scoring three of the last four points to go up 1-0.

The Blue Jays evened the match at one set apiece by grabbing control early in set two and cruising to a 25-17 set victory.  A 5-0 run off the serve of Helena Swaak to open the set gave the Blue Jays a lead they would never relinquish. The Devils got to within two at 8-6, but the Blue Jays responded with a 6-1 run to go up 14-7 and would leave by as many 13 in what became the eight-point margin.'

Adam tied her career high with 25 kills against just three errors on 48 attempts (.458).  Karrer added 13 kills and 13 digs, while Swaak (25 assists) and King (20) teamed for 45 assists on the night.  In addition to Karrer's 13 digs, the Blue Jays also got 15 digs from Evelyn Batista.

Lange paced the Devils with 15 kills, while Emma Popham (9 kills) and Amelia Kim (8) also contributed offensively.  Patterson added a match-high 16 digs and Popham chipped in with 12 for a double-double.
