Hopkins Beats Mary Washington On Dunphy PK Goal

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Junior Aidan Dunphy scored on a penalty kick to lead the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over host Mary Washington Tuesday afternoon.

After a back-and-forth first half that saw the teams combine for seven shots on goal, it was early in the second half that the Blue Jays broke through. An Eagle foul in the box in the 61st minute resulted in a Blue Jay penalty kick. Dunphy beat Griffin Hemmendinger with his shot to put Hopkins up 1-0.

The Blue Jays made the goal stand up as they withstood a late offensive pushy by the host Eagles.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 10 against 10th-ranked SUNY Cortland. Game time is slated for 12:00 pm at Homewood Field.

Graduate student Alex Morgret finished with seven saves to post his second shutout of the season.

Notes: Hopkins has won the last two meetings against Mary Washington by a 1-0 score • Each of the last six meetings in the series have been decided by just one goal.
