SWARTHMORE, PA – Ninety minutes of action solved nothing on Wednesday night at Clothier Field as the eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team battled 18
th-ranked Swarthmore to a 1-1 tie in a showdown of two of the top teams in the Centennial Conference. The Blue Jays run their record to 10-1-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the Centennial, while Swarthmore is now 9-0-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the league play.
Â
The Blue Jays controlled possession in the first half and broke through in the 21
st minute when sophomore
Lily Gaston fed junior
Katie Sullivan at the top of the box; Sullivan collected the feed, turned and fired a low, left-footed laser just inside the right post for her team-leading 11
th goal of the season.
Â
Despite outshooting the Garnet 12-6 in the first half, the Blue Jays couldn't solve Swarthmore goalie Lila Travers again and took the one-goal lead into the half.
Â
After the break, the Blue Jays continued to push, but Travers was up to the task and came up with two highlight reel stops. She robbed Gaston with a kick save early in the half and made a diving save of a
Maria Romo-Nichols offering that appeared ticketed for the top corner.
Â
The save on Romo-Nichols came just two minutes after the Garnet had evened things up as they struck in transition in the 73
rd minute. After coming up with a loose ball at midfield, Swarthmore pushed down the wing and found Ava Gizzie near the edge of the box. Gizzie turned and sent a pass through the box to the back side, where Liesel Blau's one-timer found the back of the net.
Â
The Romo-Nichols shot that Travers tipped away two minutes later was Hopkins' best chance that would have counted. Sullivan put one in the back of the net four minutes after that, but was called for offsides.
Â
Travers finished with 12 saves as the Blue Jays built a 29-12 advantage in shots.Â
Eva Breiland countered with six saves in goal for the Blue Jays.
Â
Johns Hopkins concludes its three-game road trip on Saturday, October 14 when the Blue Jays travel to Franklin & Marshall to take on the Diplomats (8-1-3 overall, 5-1-3 Centennial).
