Eighth-Ranked Blue Jays Outlast F&M, 1-0

Isenberg Scores First Goal of the Season in Win

LANCASTER, PA – The No. 8 Johns Hopkins women's soccer team concluded its three-game road trip with a hard-fought matchup against Franklin & Marshall Saturday afternoon, with Lilah Isenberg's first goal of the season also serving as the game-winner in a 1-0 win over the Diplomats. The victory moves the Blue Jays to 11-1-2 on the season with a 7-0-1 mark in Centennial play, and drops F&M to 8-2-3 on the season and 5-2-1 against conference opponents.

There was nothing to separate the sides in shots on goal (6-6) in a defensive-oriented game, but one chance was all it took for the Jays to take the lead and head back to Baltimore with a crucial conference win.

The Diplomats created the first chance of the afternoon with a shot from just inside the box, but it was calmy collected by Eva Breiland — one of the freshman's season-high six saves — to keep the game level at zero. After fending off a trio of F&M shots in the ensuing five minutes, it was Hopkins converting its first chance of the game into a goal at the 14:29 mark.

Winning the ball in the midfield off a free kick, Megha Salvi attacked the Diplomat's backline, finding Lily Gaston who controlled it with her back to goal before finding a cutting Isenberg. With just the goalie to beat the junior took one touch before slotting the ball into the far corner to secure her first of the year and put Hopkins ahead 1-0.

The Blue Jays kept their foot on the gas, tallying two corners and a pair of threatening shots from Rylie Mutton and Katie Sullivan, but neither got past F&M's Lucie Fleming. No other attempts from either side got on frame in the final 15 minutes, sending Hopkins into the break with the one-goal lead.

The Diplomats kept the pressure on to begin the second half, getting off two shots and taking one corner in the opening nine minutes before the Jays settled into their shape. The sides traded blows from the 70th minute on — neither team's chances posed too much of a threat — until the final whistle blew, earning Hopkins three points over a stout F&M side.

Next up for the Blue Jays is a return to Homewood Field Saturday, October 21 when they will take on Haverford, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
