BALTIMORE, MD – The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team scored twice in the first 10 minutes of the game and never looked back in a 4-0 win over visiting Haverford at Homewood Field Saturday evening. The win extends JHU's unbeaten streak to 12 and improves the Jays' record to 12-1-2 overall and 8-0-1 in the Centennial Conference, while the Fords slip to 6-8-1 overall and 2-6 in the Centennial.
Â
The Blue Jays wasted no time taking control as junior
Katie Sullivan scored twice in a 66-second span before the game was 10 minutes old and the Fords never seriously threatened the two-goal lead. Sullivan was on the back end of some nifty passing at the 36:22 mark as
Megha Salvi collected a lead pass from
Ella Macko at the top of the box, drew Haverford goalie Allie Billups off her line and slipped a pass across the goalmouth to Sullivan, who poked it into an open net to open the scoring.
Â
Just over a minute later, Sullivan tallied her 13
th goal of the season as she controlled a bouncing ball on the edge of the box, worked herself towards the middle of the field and fired one just inside the near post off the hands of a diving Billups.
Â
The two-goal lead lasted for just over 12 minutes before freshman
Ava Venuti and graduate student
Kacie Filian teamed up to push the lead to 3-0. Venuti took on a defender along the touchline and worked her left foot free to send a cross to the middle of the box, where Filian headed home her first goal of the season from 10 yards out.
Â
As they did in the first half, the Blue Jays struck early in the second as graduate student
Lyndon Wood poked home her first career goal off a scramble in the box after the Fords failed to clear the ball after a Hopkins corner kick.Â
Â
The Blue Jays outshot the Fords 20-2 and took three of the four corner kicks in the game.Â
Eva Breiland and Allyson Schick each played 45 minutes in goal and shared the shutout for the Blue Jays, while Lily Buyer relieved Billups in goal at the half for Haverford and made four second-half saves.
Â
This is the ninth time in 15 games this season that the Blue Jays have scored three or more goals, including the sixth time in the last eight games. The multi-goal game for Sullivan is her third of the season and the seventh of her career.
Â
Johns Hopkins will close out the Centennial Conference portion of its 2023 regular season schedule on Wednesday, October 25 when the Blue Jays travel to McDaniel to take on the Green Terror (3:30 pm). With today's win and Swarthmore's loss to McDaniel earlier today (1-0), the Blue Jays control their own fate in the race for the top seed in the upcoming Centennial Conference Tournament; a win or a tie at McDaniel will secure the number one seed for the Blue Jays.
