Johns Hopkins Blanks #24 Swarthmore, 3-0

SWARTHMORE, PA – The third-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team shutout host and 24th-ranked Swarthmore, 3-0, on Saturday night in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays move to 14-1 overall and 8-0 in the Centennial, while the Garnet fall to 10-5 and 6-2 in the CC.

Hopkins got on the board late in the first as the Blue. Jays capitalized on one of 12 penalty corners. Senior Mikayla Schoff took a hard shot at the top of the circle and Waldeck redirected it in at the right post with 31 seconds left in the opening period.

The Blue Jays then needed just 55 seconds in the third quarter to double their lead. Junior Ava Balacek collected a pass from Schoff in the middle of the circle and slipped a behind-the-back pass to senior Siena Urbanski, who swept it into the Garnet cage to put JHU up 2-0.

Hopkins closed out the scoring late in the fourth quarter. Senior Gen Mehra sent the ball into the circle to junior Emily Amsden, who fired a low shot to the back post, where junior Sophie Gomez was all alone and tipped it in.

Hopkins outshot Swarthmore, 16-5, and had a 12-4 advantage in corners. This was the first time the Garnet had been shutout since their season opener on September 1. Their five shots are also tied for a season low.

Senior Alexis Loder finished with three saves and junior Liz Falterer added a defensive save. Garnet goalie Cassandra Conklin totaled five saves in the loss.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 25 at Dickinson. The Centennial Conference contest is scheduled for a 5:00 pm start.

Notes: Urbanski moves into a tie for 11th in school history with her 27th career goal • Loder earned her 14th career shutout and is now tied for seventh in JHU history.
