Seventh-Ranked Hopkins Powers Past Washington College, 3-0

Blue Jays Score Three Second-Half Goals to Improve to 9-1-1

BALTIMORE, MD – The seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team scored three second-half goals to break a scoreless tie as the Blue Jays eased past visiting Washington College, 3-0, at Homewood Field Wednesday afternoon.  Johns Hopkins improves to 9-1-1 overall and 5-0 in the Centennial Conference with the win, while the Shorewomen slip to 4-3-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the Centennial.

Despite dominating possession and firing off all 11 first-half shots in the game, the Blue Jays found themselves tied at the break, but needed less than two minutes of the second half to break the ice.  Sophomore Maria Romo-Nichols played a loose ball to sophomore Lily Gaston high in the box to the left of Washington College goalie Hailey Sharpe and Gaston fired a 17-yarder over Sharpe's outstretched hands to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute.
That lead held for just over 21 minutes before the Blue Jays struck twice in the span of 52 seconds to put the game away.  Junior Katie Sullivan ripped her team-leading ninth goal of the season inside the far post from 18 yards out and graduate student Charlotte Tapp scored her second goal of the season when she scored off her own rebound after Sharpe stuffed her from in tight.

The Blue Jays held decided advantages in shots (25-0) and corners (6-0).  Freshman Eva Breiland played the first 80 minutes in goal for Johns Hopkins before giving way to junior Allyson Shick; neither was forced to make a save in the victory.

Sharpe posted eight saves in goal for the Shorewomen, who had a four-game unbeaten streak snapped.  Washington College had allowed just one goal in its previous four games combined before surrendering the three today.

Johns Hopkins extended its Centennial Conference regular season winning streak to 26 games dating back to 2019 with today's win.  The Blue Jays will return to action on Saturday, October 7 when the Blue Jays travel to Gettysburg for a Centennial matchup against the Bullets (7 pm).
