GETTYSBURG, PA – In a showdown between two of the top women's soccer teams in the Centennial Conference, it was seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins using goals from five different players to fuel a 5-0 victory at Gettysburg Saturday evening. The Blue Jays, who matched their largest margin of victory in the series, improve to 10-1-1 overall and 6-0 in the Centennial with the win, while the Bullets had a give-game winning streak snapped and slip to 6-4-1 overall and 4-2 in the Centennial with the loss.
Â
The Blue Jays got all the offense they would need in the first 21 minutes of the game as they struck for two early goals to grab control. Junior
Katie Sullivan put the Blue Jays up in the eighth minute when she intercepted a Bullet clearing attempt, dribbled to the middle and fired one inside the near post from distance to break the ice.
Â
The one-goal lead held for more than 13 minutes before the Blue Jays doubled their lead. Sophomore
Maria Romo-Nichols split a pair of defenders with a perfect through ball that junior
Juliana Taxter was able to track down and fire past Gettysburg goalie Alex Jurow, who had come off her line but couldn't get to the ball before Taxter.
Â
The two-goal lead held through the break and into the 52
nd minute, when freshman
Ava Venuti's cross found sophomore
Megha Salvi on the backside and she calmly fired home her second goal of the season.
Â
The Blue Jays closed the scoring with a pair of goals in a 51-second span late in the second half. Romo-Nichols blew home her fourth of the year off a nifty feed from
Rylie Mutton in the 76
th minute and
Katia Chiampas scored her first of the year in the 77
th minute to cap the victory.
Â
Johns Hopkins matched its season-high for goals in a game, ran its winning streak to seven and its unbeaten streak to nine with tonight's victory. The Blue Jays have outscored the opposition 24-3 during their seven-game winning streak.
Â
Freshman
Eva Breiland went the distance in goal and posted one save to earn the shutout. The Blue Jays outshot the Bullets, 20-2, and took all six corner kicks in the game.
Â
The Blue Jays will return to action on Wednesday, October 11 when they travel to Swarthmore for a key Centennial matchup against the Garnet (7:30 pm). The Garnet are currently ranked 20
th in the nation and will enter the game at 9-0-1 overall and 5-0 in the Centennial; they are the only other team in the Centennial that remains unbeaten in conference play.
