ANNAPOLIS, MD – Host and 19
th-ranked Navy outscored Johns Hopkins 12-4 in the second half to take a 19-10 win over the Blue Jays on Friday night in Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference action.
The Mids jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first quarter, but a five-meter goal from junior
Ian Raley sparked a 4-1 run as the Blue Jays grabbed a 4-3 lead. Freshman
Owen Bartlett fueled the run with a pair of goals, including the go-ahead goal with 10 seconds left in the quarter.
Sophomore
Gavin Brooke scored just 37 seconds into the second to push Hopkins' lead to 5-3. Billy Zech answered at the 5:13-mark to kick-start a 4-1 run that saw Navy go into the half with a 7-6 lead. The Mids picked up right where they left off in the third, scoring three straight to push their lead to 10-6 midway through the period.
Freshman
Max Blecher halted the run with a six-on-five goal, but back-to-back goals from Kiefer Black and Zach staked Navy to a 13-7 lead. Sophomore
Jason Mihalopoulos scored a man-up goal late in the quarter to make it a 13-8 game at the break.
Navy opened the fourth with back-to-back goals just 31 seconds apart to push its lead to seven. Freshman
Alec Baker and Raley answered with a pair of goals to pull the Blue Jays back within five with 3:30 to play. The Mids put the game away however with three goals in the final three minutes.
Raley led the Blue Jays with three goals, while Bartlett added a pair.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, October 8 as the Blue Jays host the Conn College Camels. The game is slated for an 11:00 start.
