BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's soccer team twice rallied from one-goal deficits to beat visiting Gettysburg, 3-2, in Centennial Conference action Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays improve to 7-2-3 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference, while the Bullets fall to 4-4-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the CC.
Gettysburg wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as the visitors took the lead just 32 seconds in. Ean Mala dribbled to the endline before centering the ball to Chase Sempervive, who volleyed it into the middle of the goal. Hopkins answered in the 20
th minute with the first of
Griffin Meyer's two goals. Sophomore
Scotty Coleman collected a rebound in the box and found Meyer in the middle of the box. Meyer turned on his defender and fired a low shot to the left side of the goal.
The Bullets retook the lead in the 26
th minute with an own goal. Less than three minutes later, the game was tied again. Senior
Francis Meyer sent a long ball through the Bullet defense.
Griffin Meyer ran onto the ball, cut back on a defender and ripped a shot to the right upper 90.
After the teams combined for four goals in the opening 28 minutes, neither team could get the go-ahead goal until late in the second. It was freshman
Jacob Sardinha who finally broke the stalemate in the 76
th minute. After a long through in by graduate student
Eli Carr, the ball pinged around the box before finding the foot of Sardinha. He settled the ball and then fired a right-footed shot off the hands of Kevin Muhic from 22 yards out. That turned out to be the game-winner as the Blue Jays grabbed the come-from-behind win.
Graduate student
JP Furman finished with three saves in the win while Muhic also had three in the loss. Hopkins outshot Gettysburg, 19-9, and had an 8-2 edge in corners.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October versus Salisbury. The non-conference contest is slated for a 4:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
Notes: Griffin Meyer now has five goals and one assist in his last three games • This was his third multi-goal game of the season • The winner between Hopkins and Gettysburg has been decided by just one goal in seven of the last nine meetings.
