Carlsen Tabbed Player of the Year, Three Earn All-Conference Recognition

Junior Becomes Program's Sixth Player of the Year

LANCASTER, PA – The Johns Hopkins volleyball team had four players earn All-Conference recognition, highlighted by Simrin Carlsen earning Player of the Year honors, as released by the conference this afternoon. Joining Carlsen on the All-Conference teams are fellow First Teamer Helena Swaak, Second Team honoree Simone Adam and Honorable Mention Chidinma Onukwugha. This is the second consecutive year the Blue Jays have had four All-Conference players, with Carlsen becoming just the sixth player in program history to be named the Player of the Year.

Carlsen was unstoppable all season in what has turned into one of the most dominant years in program history. The junior tallied double-digit kills in all but one conference match during the regular season en route to leading the Centennial in both kills (4.58) and points (5.20) per set, both of which rank top-eight nationally. During her historic campaign, the Edison, NJ native set two new program records, recording the most kills in a five-set match at 27 in Hopkins' win over Stevenson before also shattering the record for hitting percentage when attempting between 16-19 attacks when she tallied 16 kills on 18 attacks with no errors (.889 hitting percentage) in the Jays sweep of Bryn Mawr.

A four-time Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Carlsen's current average of 4.45 kills per set would be the second-highest single season mark in program history, as she sits just four kills away from becoming the eighth Blue Jay in program history to eclipse 400 kills in a single season. The Junior did all this while also ranking second on the team in digs per set at 3.04, sitting at a .949 receiving percentage on 414 attempts and leading the program's non-middles in blocks per set at .51.

Swaak earned the first All-Conference First Team recognition of her young career after claiming a spot on the Second Team a season ago. The sophomore was one of the best setters in the nation, leading the Centennial and ranking sixth in the country in assists per set at 10.66. Her 59 helpers in the Jays' win over Colorado College were a career-high and the most in a four-set match in the nation among DIII schools, as Swaak also became just the sixth player in program history to surpass 1000 assists in a single season. The McLean, VA native also became the third player in program history to win the AVCA National Player of the Week after averaging 13.11 in a 3-0 week that included wins over 25th-ranked Ithaca, Susquehanna and SUNY Geneseo.

Adam's year was altered by injuries, but the sophomore remained an elite option when healthy en route to earning a spot on the All-Conference Second Team. The California native ranked second on the team in kills (3.64) and points (3.90) per set, both of which ranked top three in the conference, tallying at least 10 kills in 10 of the 17 matches in which she appeared in at least three sets. Her season was highlighted by a 20-kill effort on a .474 hitting percentage in Hopkins' win over Colorado College. Adam's mark of 3.51 kills per set would tie her for the 14th most in a single season in program history as the sophomore continues to approach the all-time kills list — she sits 30 kills away from moving into 20th all-time — in just her second season.

Rounding out the Jays' All-Conference members is Onukwugha, who earned a spot on the Honorable Mention list for the first time in her career following a breakout junior campaign. The Elkridge, MD native led Hopkins and ranked second in the Centennial in hitting percentage (.345) among qualified members on a career-best 2.12 kills per set. Onukwugha's .88 blocks per set through the regular season also represented a career-high mark and ranked sixth in the conference, with the junior tallying at least seven kills and multiple blocks in each of her last six matches including the playoffs.

Danielle Norman was also recognized on the All-Sportsmanship team, which honors one member from each program. The senior was effective when called upon, averaging 2.18 kills per set including a season-high 13 in Hopkins' sweep of Muhlenberg.

Nex up for the Blue Jays is the NCAA Tournament, where they will host an eight-team regional beginning Thursday, Nov. 16 with the first match beginning at 11:30 a.m.
