BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team used a 12-3 second-half run to turn a 35-35 tie into a 47-38 lead late in the third quarter and later held off a fourth-quarter McDaniel rally as the Blue Jays topped the Green Terror, 55-46, in Goldfarb Gym Wednesday night. The Blue Jays run their winning streak to nine games and improve to 15-4 overall and 12-2 in the Centennial Conference with the victory, while the Green Terror slip to 6-14 overall and 4-11 in the Centennial.
The Blue Jays led 30-24 at the half and still had a six-point lead at 32-26 early in the third quarter before McDaniel used a 9-3 spurt to pull even at 35 midway through the period. Mallory Conroy scored seven of the nine points during the spree for the Terror with a pair of jumpers and a three-pointer.
Â
Johns Hopkins responded with the 12-3 run that gave them a lead they would never relinquish. A
Kristin Ralston jumper ignited the run for the Blue Jays, who got six points from sophomore
Michaela O'Neil during the surge; the Blue Jay defense held McDaniel to just a conventional three-point play from freshman Elaina Beckett during the run, which last just under four minutes late in the third quarter.
Â
Down 47-40 to start the fourth quarter, the Terror saw the Blue Jays push the lead to 10 at 50-40 on a
Kendall Dunham steal and layup and an
Olivia Parisi free throw, but they fought back to within four at 50-46 midway through the period. Beckett and Conroy both had three-point plays to account for the six points, but the Blue Jays buckled down on defense and held the Terror scoreless for the final 5:47 of the game and late jumpers from Parisi and
Macie Feldman sealed the win for Johns Hopkins.
The Terror had jumped out to an early 8-0 lead with Beckett and Conroy combining for all eight points in the first three minutes of the game before a Feldman jumper at the 6:33 mark got the Blue Jays going. Hopkins outscored the Terror 15-8 in the final 6:33 of the period to pull within 16-15 after the opening 10 minutes.  Parisi scored six first-quarter points to lead the Blue Jay rally.
Â
Johns Hopkins outscored McDaniel 15-8 in the second quarter to grab the 30-24 halftime lead. The Blue Jay defense again led the way as JHU held McDaniel to just 3-of-17 (.176) shooting in the second quarter and an 11-0 run, fueled by baskets from five different players, helped JHU grab the six-point halftime lead.
