Blue Jays Top #23 Christopher Newport, Fall to Hampton on Opening Day

Hopkins Sweeps 23rd-Ranked Captains

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The 23rd-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team opened the spring portion of its 2022-23 schedule by splitting a pair of matches on Saturday.  The Blue Jays topped 25th-ranked Christopher Newport, 9-0, before falling at Division I Hampton, 4-0.  The match against Hampton was played using NCAA Division I scoring rules; the three double matches are worth one team point, which goes to the team that wins two or three of those matches and the match is played only until a winner is determined.

Against the Captains, the Blue Jays swept the three doubles matches to grab a quick 3-0 lead.  Kamila Wong and Jay Xiao grabbed an 8-5 win at first doubles and MaryBeth Hurley and Emily Javedan added an 8-3 win at second.  Niamh Harding and Chirstina Huynh completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at third.

The Blue Jays grabbed three, three-set wins in singles with two of the three were of the come-from-behind variety.  Xiao spotted Raine Weis a set in the number spot before grabbing a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 win and Wong turned nearly an identical trick at number three as she fell 7-5 in the first set to Mia Linam before taking second (6-4) and third (6-2) sets.  Hurley added a three-set win of her own at number two as she topped Tessa Trate 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Ali Bader earned a hard-fought sweep at fourth singles as she edged Kiersten Chang (7-6 (7-4) and 7-6 (7-5) before Huynh and Harding grabbed wins at fifth and sixth by scores of 8-1 and 8-6, respectively to complete the shutout.

In the match against Hampton, the host Pirates grabbed the doubles point with wins at first (6-0) and second (6-1).  The Blue Jay tandem of Bea Manjon and Zoe Hsieh won at third by a score of 6-2.

The Pirates grabbed straight-set wins at first, second and third doubles to close out the 4-0 victory.
