Penn Rallies to Beat Johns Hopkins in Overtime, 13-12

BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting Penn scored as time expired in the fourth quarter and then scored two minutes into overtime to beat host and 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 13-12, Saturday afternoon.

Penn took advantage of a turnover in the midfield with time winding down and trailing by one in regulation. Anna Brandt found Erika Chung open in the Blue Jay fan, who scored on a quick shot to tie the game at the buzzer. The Quakers won the draw to open the overtime and Brandt ended up drawing a free position shot two minutes. She converted the opportunity to give Penn the come-from-behind win.

Brandt struck first, scoring a free position goal 3:03 into the game. The Blue Jays answered just 45 seconds later with a transition goal from junior Campbell Case. Freshman Ava Angello then put JHU ahead at the 5:53-mark when she used an Abby Hurlbrink pick to get herself open in the fan and blew a shot past Kelly Van Hoesen. Bella Kehoe scored on the run two-and-a-half minutes later to knot the score at two.

Campbell put the Blue Jays back on top at the end of the first with an unassisted tally. Hopkins pushed its lead to two just 73 seconds into the second when Angello flipped an underhand pass to sophomore Ashley Mackin, who beat Van Hoesen from the doorstep. That kicked off an 11-minute span where the teams traded goals and Hopkins led 7-5 with 2:54 on the clock. Kennon Moon then ignited a three-goal Penn run, that bridged halftime, with a pair of free position goals. Niki Miles then scored off a takeaway to cap the run and stake the Quakers to an 8-7 lead at 12:37.

Gorelick tied the game at eight, scoring off the dodge with 10:56 on the clock. Sophomore Annie Marshall and Mackin then notched back-to-back free position goals and it was 10-8 JHU after three. Mackin capped a four-goal Blue Jay run with her fifth goal of the game. A Bailey Cheetham takeaway led to a Reagan O'Brien clear and some tic-tac-toe passing that ended with Mackin's goal on the doorstep.

The Quakers answered with three goals in five minutes, bookended by a pair of Kehoe goals, to tie the game at 11-all with 5:16 to play. Gorelick then completed her hat trick, and put Hopkins back on top, with a free position goal at 1:55. Penn would score the final two goals to take the win.

Mackin led Hopkins with a career-high five goals, while Gorelick notched her second hat trick of the season. Case finished with a career-high two goals and three assists, while Angello also had a multi-point game (1g, 1a). Marshall totaled 10 draw controls – one shy of the school record. Junior Maggie Tydings made a career-best 16 saves – the most by a Blue Jay since Kathleen Garvey posted 17 on February 26, 2021.

Kehoe (4g) and Patricia Columbia-Walsh (1g, 3a) led the Quakers with four points each. Five other players notched multi-point games. Miles led the defense with three caused turnovers and five ground balls, while Van Hoesen made seven saves.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, March 1 at Georgetown. Opening draw at Cooper Field is slated for 4:00 pm.
