Johns Hopkins to Play Mitchell in NCAA Opener at Goldfarb

BALTIMORE, MD – The seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team will host Mitchell in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament it was announced today. The winner of the JHU-Mitchell game will play the winner of the other first round game between Hamilton and Montclair State.
 
Hamilton and Montclair State will tip-off at 3:30 pm on Friday, March 3 in Goldfarb Gym with Hopkins and Mitchell to follow at 6:00 pm. The winners will meet at 6:00 pm on Saturday, March 4.

How They Got Here
Johns Hopkins (23-4) earned an at-large bid to into the tournament after falling in the Centennial Conference Championship game to 15th-ranked Swarthmore on Sunday.  It was the Blue Jays' fifth straight appearance in the title game with all five meetings coming against the Garnet.
 
Mitchell (23-4) cruised into the tournament by winning the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship. The Mariners topped New England College, 109-85, to win their second straight NECC title.
 
Hamilton (19-8) won the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) to punch its ticket to the tournament. The Continentals came from behind to beat Colby, 71-59, to win their first title since joining the league in 2011-12.
 
Montclair State (22-5) grabbed an at-large bid out of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). The Red Hawks fell to Stockton, 91-86, in the NJAC Semifinals on Tuesday.
 
Series History
Johns Hopkins and Mitchell will be meeting for first time on Friday.
 
Hopkins is 1-0 all-time against Hamilton with the only meeting coming back in 1991 – a 93-84 Blue Jay win in Baltimore. JHU and Montclair State have never met on the hardwood.
 
Tournament History
Johns Hopkins is making its 15th trip to the NCAA Tournament, including its fourth in five full seasons under head coach Josh Loeffler.  The Blue Jays are 10-14 all-time in the NCAAs with appearances in the Sweet 16 in 1990 and 2015.  The Blue Jays advanced to the second round in 1991, 1998, 2007, 2018 and 2022.
