Third-Quarter Surge Powers Hopkins Past Jacksonville, 12-7

Blue Jays Outscore Dolphins 5-1 in Third Quarter

JACKSONVILLE, FL – The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team outscored 17th-ranked Jacksonville 5-1 in the third quarter to break open a close game and the Blue Jays never let the Dolphins get closer than four in the final 23 minutes of what became a 12-7 victory at Rock Stadium Saturday evening.

The Blue Jays carried a 6-5 lead into halftime on the strength of a Patrick Deans goal in transition with 2:07 remaining in the second quarter.  Senior goalie Tim Marcille made a low save, found Deans breaking near midfield and Deans raced into the zone before beating Jacksonville goalie Luke Millican from 10 yards to give the Blue Jays the one-goal lead.

The Deans goal was the first of five straight for the Blue Jays, who got goals from Cameron Chauvette and Brendan Grimes in the first 3:34 of the third quarter to quickly push the lead to 8-5.  Chauvette's goal, the first of his career, came off a nifty cross-field pass from Johnathan Peshko, while Grimes backed in his defender on the wing and beat Millican from five yards.

The lead ballooned to 10-5 on back-to-back goals from Dylan Bauer and Jacob Angelus, who scored goals just 84 seconds apart midway through the period to push the lead to five.  Bauer got his hands free on the run and scored low to the far post, while Angelus got to the middle of the field off a restart on the wing and scored from in-tight.  The teams traded goals in the final four minutes of the period to account for an 11-6 Blue Jay lead entering the final period.  A Stu Phillips goal for the Blue Jays and the third of the game by Jacksonville's Brandon Galloway accounted for the only scoring in the fourth quarter.

The third-quarter run was fueled by a dominant effort at the X from sophomore Logan Callahan, who won all six faceoffs in the period for Johns Hopkins.

Jacksonville had used a 4-1 run to turn an early 1-0 deficit into a 4-2 lead early in the second quarter.  Jacob Greiner scored twice during the spree for the Dolphins, who capitalized on several failed clears to build the early lead.

A three-goal Blue Jay run that was jump-started by a Peshko goal and included tallies from Garrett Degnon and Angelus gave the Blue Jays a 5-4 lead midway through the second period.  A Galloway goal tied it three minutes later, but Deans' goal a short time later jump-started the game-deciding five-goal run for the Blue Jays.
