#16 Johns Hopkins Fall in Extra Innings to #3 ECSU

Blue Jays Handed Their First Loss of the Season

  • Score: #16 Johns Hopkins – 2, #3 Eastern Connecticut – 3
  • Records: JHU (9-1), ECSU (5-0)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Dan Driscoll (2-0), L: Jack McRae (1-1)
  • The Short Story: The Warriors scored a run in three of the last four innings and received great pitching performances from Matthew Wooten and Dan Driscoll, to rally from behind and hand the Blue Jays their first loss of the 2023 season.
How it Happened
  • Both offenses struggled throughout the game to get runners on base. Johns Hopkins would break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs in the inning, Dillon Souvignier picked up the Blue Jays first knock of the game to keep the inning alive. Sam Frank stepped into the box next and unloaded a two-run shot to left center field to supply Johns Hopkins with their only offense of the game.
  • ECSU would not push across a run until the seventh inning. After a pair of walks to lead things off, the Warriors got a runner to third base with only one away in the frame. Pinch hitter Brent Cosculluela lifted a ball to left field that allowed Matt Malcom to tag up and score to get the Warriors on the board.
  • With two outs in the ninth inning, ECSU had the tying run at third base, with the leading run at second and Alejandro Soriano at the plate. After a wild pitch by JHU, Mason Balmer, who was on third base, broke for home and slid in to tie things up at two. Jasper Carmichael got Soriano to pop up to end the inning.
  • After JHU failed to score in the bottom of the ninth, the Warriors would grab their first lead of the game in extra innings on an RBI base-hit to left field from Jason Claiborn. Ray Leonzi came racing around third and got his hand on the plate just before the tag from Caleb Cyr. The Jays went quietly in the bottom of the 10th and ECSU came away with the 3-2 victory.

  • Dan Driscoll was dominant out of the bullpen for the Warriors, hurling four innings to earn his second win of the season. Driscoll allowed just one hit, while striking out three in his outing.
