Late Innings Surge Powers Blue Jays Past UM Boston, 9-5

Whitney Knocks in Two in Victory

  • Score: #10 Johns Hopkins- 9, UMass Boston- 5
  • Records: JHU (10-1), Mass Boston (5-4)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Matt Savedoff (3-0), L: Thomas Kierce (1-1)
  • The Short Story: Johns Hopkins took advantage of their late game opportunities, erasing a 5-4 deficit by scoring two runs in the eighth inning and three in the ninth to take a 9-5 victory over UMass Boston.

How it Happened

  • Johns Hopkins cracked the scoreboard first with a two out rally in the top of the second. Sam Browning kicked things off with a lead off double and then was plated by Dylan Whitney who roped a double after him. Isaiah Winikur proceeded to jack a two run homer to left field to put the Jays up 3-0.
  • The Beacons would have a quick answer in the bottom half of the inning, stringing together three doubles to start the inning off and bringing all three of those guys in to score.
  • The next run would not come until the fifth inning when Chris Ducko grounded into a fielders choice to score Justin Gouevia to give the Beacons their first lead of the game, 4-3.
  • The Blue Jays found themselves with a 5-4 deficit heading into the top of the eighth, needing to strike to take the lead back. Tripp Myers and Caleb Cyr worked themselves on base with a single and a walk respectively. After a wild pitch, both Cyr and Myers advanced into scoring position and a second wild pitch would bring Myers home to tie the game at five.
  • Whitney came through with a sac fly to left field that scored Cyr for his second RBI of the game to put Johns Hopkins back on top.
  • The Blue Jays would open up a cushion in the ninth inning when Jimmy Stevens stepped up to the dish with the bases loaded and two outs. Stevens lifted a ball into shallow center field that got past a diving outfielder and down for a hit that would bring in two runs, and an additional run on a throwing error to make it 9-5.
  • Matt Savedoff would retire the side in the bottom of the ninth to seal the victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Blue Jays finished the game with 13 hits, which is the eighth time this season they have finished with 10 or more hits in a game. Johns Hopkins is a perfect 8-0 in those contests.
  • Jimmy Stevens led the Jays in hits going 3-for-5 with two RBI. It was Stevens' fourth multi-hit performance this season.
  • Matt Savedoff earned his third win on the season with his stellar performance on the mound out of the bullpen. Savedoff fired 3.2 scoreless innings while punching out five batters to lead the Jays to the win.
