Blue Jays Rally Late to Defeat Hope, 7-6

Team Erases Six Run Deficit to Earn the Victory

  • The Short Story: The Blue Jays erased an early six run deficit with some timely hitting to rally back and defeat the Dutchmen, 7-6.

How it Happened

  • Johns Hopkins fell behind 6-0 in the first three innings after two RBI fielders choices from Hope and RBI hits from Nolan Gardner and Owen Krizan.
  • The Blue Jays got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when Tripp Myers stepped up with a two-out, two RBI base hit to left center field to cut the deficit to four.
  • Ryan Anderson would be the bridge for the Blue Jays pitching staff, coming in a throwing 4.2 shut out innings, while only allowing two hits and pushing out two.
  • The next runs for JHU came in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Dylan Whitney put a ball in play to short and reached on a throwing error that scored Shawn Steuerer. JHU would would capitalize on the mistake as Isaiah Winukur and Matthew Cooper both followed up with singles to make it a 6-5 game.
  • Johns Hopkins would grab their first lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth. Alex Shane and Dylan Whitney picked up back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners with no one out. A wild pitch came after, and Shane broke for home, scoring to tie the game up.
  • With Whitney standing out on second base, Matthew Cooper drove a base-hit to left field, four his fourth hit of the game, to bring Whitney home and put the Blue Jays on top, 7-6.
  • Hope would not go down without a fight as they loaded the bases in the ninth with two outs against Ben Keever. Keever got ahead in the count and blew a two strike fast ball by Kirzan to strand all three runners and close out the victory.

Inside the Box Score

  • Matt Cooper finished the game 4-for-5 with four singles in the game. It marked the first time in his Blue Jays career he got four hits.
  • Anderson and Keever combined to pitch 6.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen only allowing three hits and striking out four Hope batters.
  • The largest deficit the Blue Jays faced this season before today was three runs twice, against Johnson & Wales and Wittenberg. The Blue Jays have taken the lead in the eighth inning of games in back-to-back games this season.
