Blue Jays Take Down Oswego State in a 16-9 Slugfest

Team Moves to 3-0 in Florida

  • Score- #10 Johns Hopkins- 16, Oswego State- 9
  • Records: JHU (12-1), OSU (5-8)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Hyunwoo Roh (1-0), L: Larry Citrola (1-1), S: Jaspar Carmichael (1)
  • The Short Story: After falling behind 7-0, the Blue Jays steadily chipped away to even things up in the fourth inning. Strong bullpen pitching kept JHU in it and the bats continued to stay hot in the later innings to give the Jays a 16-9 win.

How it Happened

  • The Lakers batted around in the top of the first inning, scoring seven runs on seven hits to grab a commanding lead early on.
  • The Jays bounced back in the bottom of the second, capitalizing on a couple errors from OSU. After a Sam Frank double, the Lakers committed two errors that put runners on base and allowed them to score. Charlie Monterrosa picked up his first career RBI and Dylan Whitney also drove in a run on a sac fly to make it 7-4.
  • After a Jimmy Stevens RBI single in the third, the Blue Jays came within one run after Whitney drove in Monterrosa on an RBI single to right field. Matthew Cooper then drew a walk, and a wild pitch sent Whitney over to third. The Blue Jays manufactured the tying run by Cooper getting caught up between first and second and Whitney crossing home before Cooper was tagged out to tie things up.
  • After back to back shut down innings by Johns Hopkins pitchers, Monterrosa and Whitney set the table for the Jays in the bottom of the sixth, both getting hit by a pitch. With two outs, Cooper lined a base hit to right field to plate Monterrosa to give Hopkins a 8-7 lead. Myers then laid down a bunt in a perfect spot up the third base line to score Whitney. Another run would come in on a wild pitch to push the lead up to three, 10-7.
  • The game would be broken open in the bottom of the next inning when Isaiah Winikur stepped into the box. On a 3-2, with two outs, and the bases loaded, Winikur smacked a no-doubter over the left field wall to break things open.
  • Oswego State would push across a run in the ninth, but it was far from enough and the Blue Jays walked away with a 16-9 win.

Inside the Box Score

  • Hyunwoo Roh, Jack McRae and Jaspar Carmichael kept the Blue Jays in the game by only allowing one run through the final 8.2 innings. Roh earned his first career win, throwing 2.2 innings and striking out two.
  • Runners left on base were a huge issue for the Lakers throughout the game. OSU stranded 12 runners, while Johns Hopkins only stranded five.
  • Of Johns Hopkins 16 runs scored, 11 of them came with two outs in the inning.
