Blue Jays Fall to Southern Maine, 8-3

JHU Picks up First Loss on Spring Break Trip

  • Score: #10 Johns Hopkins- 3, Southern Maine- 8
  • Records: JHU (12-2), Southern Maine (2-8)
  • Pitching Decision- W: Bryce Afthim (1-1), L: Bearden Awadzi (1-1)
  • The Short Story: Six first inning walks put the Blue Jays in an early whole that they could never dig out of, finishing with their second loss of the season.

How it Happened

  • The first six batters for the Huskies reached base on a walk in the bottom of the first, bringing in three runs. An over thrown ball on a fielders choice would bring in two more runs to give USM a 5-0 lead.
  • Shawn Steuerer was the only source of offense for Johns Hopkins in the contest. He launched his first home run of the game to left field in the top of the fourth with Dillon Souvignier on base to make it a three run game.
  • The Huskies would push their lead back up to five in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back two out hits to score Cam Seymour and Jason Komulainen.
  • Steuerer would add on to his home run total in the top of the sixth, this time knocking one out to right field to make it a 7-3 game.
  • The Blue Jays offense would go quietly the rest of the game, and the Huskies would tack on one more run to come away with a 8-3 win.

Inside the Box Score

  • Bryce Afthim hurled a complete game for the Huskies to earn his first win of the season. He only allowed five hits and punched out eight batters.
  • Steuerer's two home runs bring his season total to five, which is two more than anyone else on the team currently. He was the only Blue Jays to pick up multiple hits in the game.
  • The all-time series is now 3-3 between the Huskies and Blue Jays with today's result.
