More Late Game Heroics Leads #10 Johns Hopkins to 5-4 Win Over Wooster

Bullpen Pitches 4.1 Shutout Innings to Fuel Comeback

  • Score: #10 Johns Hopkins- 5, Wooster- 4
  • Records: JHU (13-2), Wooster (4-5)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Cole Jefferson, L: Alex Gerdenich (0-2)
  • The Short Story: The Blue Jays bullpen once again came up big, shutting out Wooster for the last four innings of the game, which allowed the Blue Jays bats to heat up and complete a 5-4 comeback win.

How it Happened

  • Both pitchers started off in control of the game with the only run of the first four innings coming on an error. Grant Michell brought in a run on an error in the bottom of the third to put Wooster up 1-0.
  • Wooster opened up a comfortable lead in the bottom of the fifth with base hits from Mitchell, Nick Pett and Dean Brown to pick up RBIs and push their lead out to four.
  • JHU came up with a needed response in the top of the sixth when Sam Frank came up with two outs and runners on second and third. Frank yanked a double down the left field line to get the Blue Jays their first run. Alex Shane kept the train rolling next, poking a base hit up the middle to score two more and pull JHU within one run.
  • Johns Hopkins had a chance to push across the tying run in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with nobody out. The Fighting Scots worked out of the jam by forcing a 1-2-3 double play, followed by a a groundout to third to squander the Blue Jays efforts.
  • Down by one in the eighth, the Blue Jays once again got two runners in scoring position after an Alex Shane sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out. Jimmy Stevens would get the job done next, lifting a ball deep enough into center field to score Shawn Steuerer and pull things even at four.
  • Like they have been the whole week, Johns Hopkins completed the comeback in the top of the ninth. Charlie Monterrosa got into scoring position with a pinch hit double to right center. With two down, Dillon Souvignier marched into the box trying to come through with a clutch go-ahead hit. Souvignier deposited a ball into left center field that brought in the go-ahead run to give JHU their first lead of the game.
  • Freshman Cole Jefferson sat Wooster down in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first career win and finish off a 5-4 win for the Jays.

Inside the Box Score

  • Ben Keever hurled 2.1 scoreless innings to hold Wooster down throughout the later innings. Keever now has a scoreless inning streak of 6.2 innings.
  • Souvignier's RBI single in the ninth gave him his 10th RBI of the season. That total is currently tied for third most on the team.
  • So far in Florida, the Blue Jays are 4-1, and in all four wins, the Blue Jays have taken the lead in the sixth inning or later, with three times being in the eighth or later.
