#9 Johns Hopkins Rips 18 Hits in 12-3 Win Over #7 UWSP

Cooper's Two Homers Puts Exclamation Point on Victory

  • Score: #9 Johns Hopkins- 12, #7 Wisconsin Stevens Point- 3
  • Records: JHU (14-2), UWSP (7-3)
  • Pitching Decision: W: Gabe Romano (3-0), L: Tyler Beyer (1-1)
  • The Short Story: After falling behind 2-0 in the first, Johns Hopkins hung a six spot in the second inning and never looked back from there, mashing 18 hits in a 12-3 victory over UWSP.

How it Happened

  • Gabe Romano battled through a tough first inning during his first start in 10 days as the Pointers picked up two runs on three hits, one run being unearned, to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
  • It would not take long for the Blue Jays offense to respond as they exploded for six runs in the top of the second. The bases were loaded for Jimmy Stevens with one away and he deposited a ball into the left center field gap that scored Shawn Steuerer and Alex Shane to tie things up. Dylan Whitney came up behind him and lined one into right center to plate two more. Matthew Cooper put the exclamation point on the inning, launching a two run shot to left field, for his fourth homer of the season, to give JHU a 6-2 lead.
  • Stevens and Whitney set the table again in the fourth. After a Stevens single to left, Whitney roped a ball just inside the third base bag into left field to bring in Stevens. Cooper would also double later in the inning to plate Whitney to push the lead out to six.
  • Wouldn't you know, Stevens and Whitney would come through once more in the top of the next inning, both picking up RBI base hits to grow the lead even further to 10-2.
  • Cooper would leave the yard one more time in the top of the sixth, smashing the first pitch he saw well over the left field fence. The two home runs now ties Cooper for the team lead in that category.
  • Romano settled in after the first inning, pitching six strong innings, only allowing the two runs he surrendered in the first. Ryan Anderson and Hyunwoo Roh finished off the Pointers in the last two innings to cap off a 12-3 win.

Inside the Box Score

  • The Blue Jays eight and nine hitters, Stevens and Whitney, finished a combined 6-for-8 with three doubles and seven RBI. Stevens is now all alone as the team leader in RBI with 16, and Whitney knocked in a career-high four.
  • In addition to being tied for the lead in homers, Cooper now has three multi-home run games in his college career.
  • Shawn Steuere picked up four knocks in the game, going 4-for-5 to tie a career high in hits from last season.
  • Through 24 innings this season, Romano has only allowed two earned runs and his ERA sits at 0.75 on the year.
